Arci Movie's summer open-air cinema in the gardens of Villa Bruno
Cinema intorno al Vesuvio is the summer open-air film festival organized by the Arci Movie association in the park of Villa Bruno, located at Via Cavalli di Bronzo 22, in the municipality of San Giorgio a Cremano (Metropolitan City of Naples, Campania). For about a month, from early July to the first days of August, the gardens of this Vesuvian villa become a cinema arena with screenings almost every evening at 9:15 PM. This is more than just a summer film schedule: it is a cultural project that for over thirty years has brought together auteur cinema, a diverse public, and the territory at the foot of Mount Vesuvius.
The arena was born in 1994 in San Sebastiano al Vesuvio under the name "Pierrot sotto le stelle" (Pierrot under the stars), linked to the Pierrot cinema-theater that Arci Movie helped save. Over the years, the festival has grown into a circuit embracing the entire Vesuvian area, with over 20,000 attendees per year across the various activities of the association, which was founded in 1990 in the Neapolitan district of Ponticelli. Since 2017, the permanent summer venue has been Villa Bruno, where the 33rd edition was celebrated in 2026.
The 2026 program featured some of the most talked-about titles of the season, alternating between major international productions, Italian auteur cinema, and perspectives on the city of Naples. Films on the program included:
The hallmark of the festival is the presence of the authors. Many screenings are preceded by a meeting with directors, actors, and cultural figures, who then remain to engage in dialogue with the audience. In 2026, guests on the arena stage included Rocco Papaleo and Teresa Saponangelo, Vincenzo Marra with actress Dalia Frediani, Japanologist Giorgio Amitrano, actress Milvia Marigliano (2026 Nastro d'Argento winner for Best Supporting Actress), Mariano Rigillo, Peppe Iodice, director Francesco Prisco, and journalist Conchita Sannino. The opening night saw the participation of Evelina Christillin, president of the Egyptian Museum Foundation of Turin, alongside Mayor Michele Carbone.
As Roberto D'Avascio, president of Arci Movie, recalled, in a time when images are increasingly consumed in solitude, the arena is "a counter-current gesture: sitting next to others, watching together."
Villa Bruno is one of the historic residences of the Golden Mile, the famous axis of 18th-century villas that descends from Vesuvius towards the gulf. Today, it is a municipal cultural hub with a public park that, on summer evenings, fills with chairs facing the big screen. The formula is simple and successful: popular pricing, quality programming, and a green space just a stone's throw from the city. It is no coincidence that the mayor of San Giorgio a Cremano defined the festival as "a stable and awaited presence of the summer in San Giorgio."
Those spending the summer between Naples and the Vesuvian coast will find the perfect evening here: a film worth seeing, the coolness of the park, and the chance to listen to those who truly make cinema.
For the thirty-third edition, Arci Movie confirmed the formula that has made the Villa Bruno arena a staple of the Vesuvian summer: screenings almost every evening at 9:15 PM, popular prices, and a selection that alternates between auteur cinema, major international titles, and Neapolitan perspectives.
The opening night on July 1st featured Hamnet by Oscar-winning director Chloé Zhao, in the presence of Mayor Michele Carbone and Evelina Christillin. In the following days, the program included La gioia with Valeria Golino, Wuthering Heights by Emerald Fennell, Il bene comune, Era by Vincenzo Marra, La grazia by Paolo Sorrentino, and the 4K restoration of Millennium Actress by Satoshi Kon. The closing, on August 1st and 2nd, was dedicated to Il maestro.
Arci Movie president Roberto D'Avascio described the arena as "a counter-current gesture: sitting next to others, watching together," in an era where images are increasingly consumed in solitude.
