The under-30 emerging theatre festival-competition at the Teatro Sociale in Gualtieri
Direction Under 30 is the first Italian project entirely dedicated to supporting the under-30 theatre scene. Promoted by the Teatro Sociale di Gualtieri, in the Municipality of Gualtieri in the province of Reggio Emilia (Emilia-Romagna), in collaboration with the Fondazione I Teatri di Reggio Emilia, the festival takes place every summer in the evocative setting of the 19th-century theatre of Palazzo Bentivoglio, overlooking the scenic Piazza Bentivoglio.
Since its inception in 2014, Direction Under 30 has been based on a precise idea of mutual aid among young people: overturning the traditional hierarchies of the performing arts world by entrusting artistic direction and award assignments not to established professionals, but to their peers. The work of young companies is thus evaluated by under-30 juries, in a spirit of generational reciprocity and peer dialogue.
The process is divided into several phases over a few months:
At the end of the festival, the under-30 juries assign the awards. The Jury Prize includes a net sum of €4,000 for the winning company to support its production activities and growth. The performance awarded by critics finds a place in the program of Festival Aperto, the review organized by Fondazione I Teatri di Reggio Emilia, ensuring emerging artists valuable visibility on the national circuit.
Direction Under 30 is an integral part of Terreni Fertili Festival, the umbrella of reviews by the Teatro Sociale di Gualtieri, and since 2017 it has been the cornerstone of the national network Risonanze Network, dedicated to promoting young artists and involving the under-30 audience in artistic direction in various Italian cities. An event that makes Gualtieri, a small village in the Bassa reggiana along the Po River, a summer capital of the new theatre scene.
The thirteenth edition of the festival-competition at the Teatro Sociale di Gualtieri is confirmed for July 24, 25, and 26, 2026. As tradition dictates, the six finalist performances will be staged, two per day, selected by the under-30 artistic direction team following the national call for entries and an intensive collective selection process held in early June.
Under-30 juries will award the prizes, including the Jury Prize of €4,000 net and the inclusion of the critic's award-winning performance in the Festival Aperto program.
The detailed program for the 13th edition, including the names of the six finalist companies and the order of performances over the three evenings of July 24, 25, and 26, 2026, will be announced by the Teatro Sociale di Gualtieri in the weeks preceding the festival, after the selection process entrusted to the under-30 artistic direction. It is advisable to follow the official channels for the complete schedule.
The Teatro Sociale is located in Piazza IV Novembre, in Palazzo Bentivoglio, in the historic center of Gualtieri (RE). By car, it is reachable from the Reggio Emilia exit of the A1 motorway, continuing towards the Bassa reggiana; by train, the reference station is Reggio Emilia, connected to Gualtieri by intercity bus lines.
The performances take place over three consecutive evenings at the end of July, with two shows per day. For times, access methods, and tickets, it is advisable to consult the official website and the ticket office of the Teatro Sociale di Gualtieri.
