About Désarpa of Bionaz

Between late September and early October, Bionaz celebrates the désarpa: the ancient tradition of herds descending from high-altitude pastures towards the valley floor, at the end of summer. The cows come down adorned with colourful "bosquets", announced by the sound of cowbells, in a procession that crosses the village. The festival, featuring the election of the "reina dou lace" (milk queen) and the queen of the horns, and the tasting of local products, celebrates the work of the herders and the rural identity of the Valpelline.

When the herds return to the valley

The désarpa (or "dezarpa") is one of the most cherished traditions of the Valpelline: it represents the descent of the herds from high-altitude pastures towards the valley floor, at the end of the summer season. In Bionaz, between late September and early October, this age-old ritual becomes a grand village festival celebrating the work of the herders and the community's deep connection with the mountains.

Decorated cows and pasture queens

The cows descend adorned with "bosquets", colourful decorations that enhance their beauty, announced by the sound of cowbells echoing through the valley. The procession crosses the village amidst the enthusiasm of visitors, who can join the descent from various pastures or await the arrival in Bionaz. A highlight is the election of the "reina dou lace" (the milk queen) and the queen of the horns, awards linked to the Aosta Valley's Batailles de Reines culture.

Flavours and identity of the Valpelline

The festival concludes with the tasting of local products: pasture cheeses, cured meats, and Valdostan traditional specialities. Organized by the association Valpelline All Season, the désarpa of Bionaz is a precious opportunity to discover the authenticity of a mountain municipality in the province of Aosta, where shepherding and cattle breeding remain vibrant elements of local identity.
