The satirical funeral of Carnival on Ash Wednesday in Montorio al Vomano
The Dead Carnival is one of the most original and recognizable traditions in Abruzzo. Every year, in the town of Montorio al Vomano, in the province of Teramo, the evening of Ash Wednesday does not merely mark the beginning of Lent: while Carnival fades away in the rest of Italy, here it is celebrated with a genuine theatrical funeral, ironic and irreverent, which spectacularly concludes the carnival week.
The origins of the event date back to the 1920s, when opponents of the local fascist regime found in the parody of a funeral a way to freely express their political thoughts. Banned in the post-war period, the tradition was later revived and has continued to grow, becoming an event appreciated well beyond regional borders. Even today, the procession retains its original vocation: during the parade, passages of scathing satire are read, inspired by the main events and figures of local and national news, sparing neither politicians, institutions, nor social customs.
On the evening of the ritual, a masked procession departs from Via dei Mulini and crosses the streets of the historic center until it reaches the site of the funeral. Leading the scene is a true court of popular actors: the inconsolable widow of Carnival, weeping children, a priest performing blessings, men dressed as women, and a series of satirical pantomimes. A performer is laid in a rustic wooden coffin to impersonate the deceased Carnival. The famous funeral notice posted in the streets reads: "Last night, at the height of joy, Carnival was torn from his loved ones", and ironically specifies "no flowers, but fruit and vegetables".
The coffin is accompanied by the Montorio al Vomano town band, which alternates Chopin's funeral march with irreverent, cheerful tunes, creating that contrast between mourning and celebration that is the heart of the event. Citizens and neighborhoods collaborate every year on costumes, sets, and decorations, while dance schools accompany the procession with evocative choreography. At the end of the route, the final theatrical performance takes place, with the official declaration of the "buried" Carnival.
The Dead Carnival is organized by the Pro Loco of Montorio al Vomano, with the patronage and support of the Municipality and the BIM. Beyond the spectacle, the evening offers convivial moments with tastings of typical products such as castagnole and mulled wine, offered to participants. Nestled in the landscape of the Teramo province, at the foot of the Gran Sasso, the event represents an authentic opportunity to discover one of the most vibrant expressions of Abruzzese folklore, where satire, theater, and community merge into a collective ritual with timeless charm.
