A City That Remembers
The Day of Remembrance is the international observance that commemorates the victims of the Holocaust on January 27th. In Udine, the Municipality promotes an extensive program of initiatives every year, which, in the weeks surrounding this date, enlivens the city's cultural venues with meetings, theatrical performances, exhibitions, screenings, and concerts dedicated to the memory of the Shoah and deportation.
The Stolpersteine
A symbolic moment of the Udine program is the placement of the Stolpersteine (Stumbling Stones), small brass plaques placed in front of the last known residences of those who were deported and murdered in the extermination camps. Dedicated to partisans, soldiers, and citizens who disappeared in the camps, these stones make memory a part of the city's daily fabric, restoring a name and a story to each victim.
Testimonies and Culture
The calendar features testimonies from survivors, meetings with historians and authors, book presentations, theatrical performances, multimedia exhibitions created in collaboration with schools, and commemorative concerts. The venues range from theaters, libraries, and historic palaces to Udine Castle, in a journey that particularly involves young people, so that memory becomes awareness and responsibility.

The 2026 Day of Remembrance
For 2026, the Municipality of Udine offers a program of 18 events, from January 19th to February 5th, to commemorate the Shoah and the victims of deportation. The core of the commemorations is the placement of eight Stolpersteine dedicated to partisans, soldiers, and citizens who disappeared in the extermination camps.
Among the most significant events are the video testimony of Sami Modiano, one of the few children to survive Auschwitz, and the Concert of Remembrance at the Teatro Nuovo Giovanni da Udine with the FVG Orchestra. The calendar also includes meetings, book presentations, multimedia exhibitions created with schools, and theatrical performances.

Monday, January 19th — Opening at Libreria Tarantola with "Io porto memoria" (I Carry Memory).
Thursday, January 22nd — At Biblioteca Joppi "Enciclopedia delle donne. Riaffiorano le nostre vite" (Encyclopedia of Women. Our Lives Emerge), on female deportations to Ravensbrück.
Saturday, January 24th — Palazzo Morpurgo hosts the exhibition "Pietre di inciampo" (Stumbling Stones), a multimedia project by students of ISIS Malignani (open until February 8th).
Tuesday, January 27th — Placement of the eight Stolpersteine, laying of a wreath at the Monumental Cemetery in memory of the Italian Military Internees, official ceremony at Parco della Rimembranza, and the Concert of Remembrance at the Teatro Nuovo Giovanni da Udine with the FVG Orchestra. The video testimony of Sami Modiano will be broadcast during the events.
January 30th-31st — At Teatro Palamostre, the play "La Rosa Bianca" (The White Rose).
Sunday, February 1st — At Udine Castle "An afternoon between art and memory," with a guided tour and concert "Musiche negate" (Denied Music).
