The race of the saints that saved Corleone, an intangible heritage of the Sicilian Region
In the heart of inland Sicily, in the town of Corleone (Province of Palermo), one of the most identity-defining festivals of the Sicilian hinterland is celebrated: the Cursa di Santu Luca. Every year, on the last Sunday of May, the historic center of Corleone comes alive for the race of the statues of Saint Leoluca, the city's patron saint, and Saint Anthony the Abbot. The statues are carried on the shoulders of the faithful to the town gates and then processed back to the starting point, where the two saints greet each other with the famous inchinata (bow).
The Cursa has its roots in an episode of the Risorgimento: according to tradition, during the revolutionary events of 1860, Corleone was spared by the Bourbon army thanks to the intercession of Saint Leoluca and Saint Anthony, who supposedly stopped the invaders at the city gates. Since then, the community has renewed the memory of that miracle every year with a race filled with emotion, faith, and popular participation.
Saint Leoluca was born in Corleone between 815 and 818. Baptized with the name Leone, he grew up in a wealthy family and, after being orphaned, distributed his wealth to the poor, retiring to Basilian monastic life where he took the name Luca. Venerated by the people of Corleone also as a protector against earthquakes, he is remembered in tradition for the miracle of the bundles of firewood that moved while suspended at his side. His main feast day is March 1st, marked by the evocative lighting of the luminiane, bonfires that illuminate the streets as the statue passes.
During the days of the Cursa, in addition to liturgical moments, Corleone offers open-air masses, theatrical performances, historical re-enactments, marching bands, and gastronomic festivities such as the ricotta festival, a typical local product. The day traditionally ends with fireworks. It is an opportunity to discover a village in the Upper Belice Valley rich in history, churches, and traditions, far from the media stereotypes that often accompany the name of Corleone.
The Cursa di Santu Luca 2026 in Corleone is spread over four days, from Thursday, May 21 to Sunday, May 24, with a program that weaves together religious, cultural, and popular moments. The highlight is the race of the statues of Saint Leoluca and Saint Anthony the Abbot, scheduled for the evening of Sunday, May 24, followed by traditional fireworks. The festival is recognized as an intangible heritage of the Sicilian Region.
Corleone can be reached by car from Palermo (about 60 km) by taking the SS118 heading south; the journey takes about an hour. There is no direct train connection: the alternative to a private vehicle is the scheduled bus service connecting Palermo to Corleone.
The events take place in the historic center of Corleone, between the Church of Saint Leoluca, the Mother Church, Piazza Asilo, and the Villa Comunale. The main race of the saints is held on the last Sunday of May, in the late afternoon.
Admission to all events is free. It is recommended to arrive early for the procession and the race, which are very popular, and to wear comfortable shoes for walking the sloping streets of the historic center.
