About Cursa di Santu Luca

Every year on the last Sunday of May, Corleone relives its most heartfelt celebration: the Cursa di Santu Luca. This event features the statues of Saint Leoluca and Saint Anthony the Abbot being carried at a run to the town gates, followed by a procession and the final 'inchino' (bow) between the two saints. Tradition holds that the city was spared from the Bourbon troops during the 1860 uprisings thanks to the intercession of its patron saint. Recognized as an intangible heritage of the Sicilian Region, it is one of the most evocative religious and folk festivals in the Palermo area.

The Cursa di Santu Luca, the soul of Corleone

In the heart of inland Sicily, in the town of Corleone (Province of Palermo), one of the most identity-defining festivals of the Sicilian hinterland is celebrated: the Cursa di Santu Luca. Every year, on the last Sunday of May, the historic center of Corleone comes alive for the race of the statues of Saint Leoluca, the city's patron saint, and Saint Anthony the Abbot. The statues are carried on the shoulders of the faithful to the town gates and then processed back to the starting point, where the two saints greet each other with the famous inchinata (bow).

A festival born from a legend

The Cursa has its roots in an episode of the Risorgimento: according to tradition, during the revolutionary events of 1860, Corleone was spared by the Bourbon army thanks to the intercession of Saint Leoluca and Saint Anthony, who supposedly stopped the invaders at the city gates. Since then, the community has renewed the memory of that miracle every year with a race filled with emotion, faith, and popular participation.

Who was Saint Leoluca

Saint Leoluca was born in Corleone between 815 and 818. Baptized with the name Leone, he grew up in a wealthy family and, after being orphaned, distributed his wealth to the poor, retiring to Basilian monastic life where he took the name Luca. Venerated by the people of Corleone also as a protector against earthquakes, he is remembered in tradition for the miracle of the bundles of firewood that moved while suspended at his side. His main feast day is March 1st, marked by the evocative lighting of the luminiane, bonfires that illuminate the streets as the statue passes.

Between the sacred and the popular

During the days of the Cursa, in addition to liturgical moments, Corleone offers open-air masses, theatrical performances, historical re-enactments, marching bands, and gastronomic festivities such as the ricotta festival, a typical local product. The day traditionally ends with fireworks. It is an opportunity to discover a village in the Upper Belice Valley rich in history, churches, and traditions, far from the media stereotypes that often accompany the name of Corleone.
