The private courtyards of Auzate open their doors to showcase the art, traditions, and flavors of the Cusio region
In Auzate, a hamlet of the municipality of Gozzano in the Province of Novara, there is a spring weekend when the doors of private courtyards swing wide open to welcome visitors. This is Curiosando tra i Cortili, also known as Cortili Aperti di Auzate: an event created to showcase the artistic, artisanal, and gastronomic heritage of this small village just a short distance from Lake Orta, in Upper Piedmont.
The concept is simple and charming: for two days, residents open their courtyards, farmyards, and most characteristic spots, transforming the streets of Auzate into an open-air trail filled with artisan stalls, exhibitions, music, and the aromas of traditional cooking. You can stroll from one courtyard to the next at your own pace, exploring details and corners that usually remain hidden.
One of the most popular highlights is the guided walk along the Grua stream, a naturalistic and historical route led by environmental guides, featuring readings and theatrical performances along the way. The meeting point is Piazza Ferrini, and the route, which is of moderate hiking difficulty with a gentle elevation gain, lasts about two hours. It is a unique way to discover the Cusio territory, blending nature with local stories.
A major focus is placed on local gastronomy: at the refreshment points, you can taste Piedmontese specialties such as polenta, tapulone, local cheeses, beef tongue with green sauce, and the ever-present grilled sausages, all served in a convivial, small-town atmosphere.
Organized by the Comitato Cortili Aperti, the event has grown over time to become a staple of the Gozzano spring calendar, uniting the entire Auzate community. With dance performances, majorette shows, choirs, and activities for children, Curiosando tra i Cortili is a festival that captures the authentic soul of an Upper Piedmontese village and the joy of coming together.
