About Culture and Art on the River and the Sea

In Ostia Antica, within Rome's Municipio X, one of the most original initiatives of the Roman summer returns: free boat excursions along the Tiber estuary, combined with traveling painting and photography exhibitions and cultural walks in the Roman Coast State Nature Reserve. A one-hour-and-forty-five-minute cruise between the Isola Sacra, the Idroscalo, and the sea outlet, featuring talks on the natural environment and the archaeology of the coastline.

A festival spanning river and sea

Culture and Art on the River and the Sea - Discovering the Tiber Estuary is a free-entry event held in Ostia Antica, in the Municipio X of Rome, in the Lazio region. The concept is as simple as it is effective: taking art out of museums and setting it on a journey along the final stretch of the Tiber, where the river meets the Tyrrhenian Sea. Painting and photography exhibitions, educational talks, and a cruise lasting about one hour and forty-five minutes create a path that is simultaneously cultural, naturalistic, and archaeological.

Navigating the Tiber estuary

The boat departs from the Ostia Antica river landing on Via Gherardo and travels downstream to the estuary. The route includes circumnavigating the Isola Sacra, reaching the Idroscalo, and heading out to sea before returning to the dock. It is a perspective few Romans know: from the water, one can clearly read the geography of the estuary, the riparian vegetation, the birdlife, and the traces of the ancient port that supplied Rome for centuries. On board, during the navigation, artistic exhibitions are set up, and meetings dedicated to the natural environment of the estuary and the history and archaeology of the Roman coast are held.

Walking in the Roman Coast Reserve

Those who wish can add a guided cultural walk to their excursion within the Roman Coast State Nature Reserve: the meeting point is at the corner of Via Capo Due Rami and Via Giovanni Patroni. The walk begins in the late afternoon and leads to the boarding point. It is a way to arrive at the boat having already read the landscape from the ground, amidst pine forests, reed beds, and signs of 20th-century land reclamation.

Exhibitions and the Belvedere Park

Before departure, the Belvedere Park of Ostia Antica hosts the opening of the exhibition: painting and photography dedicated to the river, the sea, and the estuary landscape, with works that then accompany participants on board. The exhibitions are itinerant and change throughout the season, giving each date its own unique character.

A project by Rome Capital

The initiative is promoted by Rome Capital - Department of Culture and was a winner of the Roma Creativa 365. Culture all year round public notice. It is organized by the Pro Loco Ostia-Mare of Rome in collaboration with Zรจtema Progetto Cultura. The success of the first season was immediate: in the debut edition, booking requests far exceeded available spots, forcing organizers to temporarily suspend registrations.

Why it's worth the trip

  • It is completely free, including exhibitions and navigation.
  • It combines contemporary art, protected nature, and archaeology in a single afternoon.
  • It offers an unprecedented perspective on Ostia Antica and the Tiber estuary, reachable by train from Rome.
  • It is suitable for families and those looking for outdoor activities far from the crowds of the historic center.

For those visiting Rome in summer, it is one of the few opportunities to step outside the monumental perimeter and discover the ancient and still-vibrant relationship between the city and its river.
