About Cressalonga

The Cressalonga is a non-competitive fun run that has been a staple of spring in Cressa, a small town in the Province of Novara, Piedmont, for decades. Part of the Gamba d'Oro circuit, it features a long course of approximately 11 km through the roads, vineyards, and dirt paths of the Novara hills, alongside a short 2 km route open to families and children. It is a popular amateur event where participation matters more than the stopwatch.

The Cressalonga, a Novara running tradition

The Cressalonga is one of the most beloved non-competitive fun runs in the Novara area. It takes place in Cressa, a small town of just under 1,500 inhabitants nestled in the hills of the Province of Novara, in the heart of Piedmont, halfway between Borgomanero and the Ticino valley. The event is an open race for everyone, welcoming trained runners, casual walkers, and entire families alike.

A history dating back to 1975

The origins of the Cressalonga go back to 1975, when the Pro Cressa association organized an autumn race to celebrate an anniversary linked to the Madonna delle Grazie church. Over the years, the event has grown into a classic of the running season: some historic editions have attracted thousands of participants, peaking at nearly a thousand registrants in a single year. Today, the race is organized by Podistica 2005 Cressa and is featured in the Atletica Valsesia calendar.

The Gamba d'Oro circuit

The Cressalonga is one of the stages of the Gamba d'Oro circuit, a historic calendar of non-competitive runs that has united dozens of running groups and associations in Piedmont for nearly half a century, particularly in the provinces of Novara and Verbano-Cusio-Ossola. Being part of the Gamba d'Oro means joining a tight-knit network of enthusiasts who meet every weekend in a different town, rewarding consistency and participation throughout the season.

The route through vineyards and trails

The main track, approximately 11 km long, alternates between asphalt and dirt roads, crossing the vineyards and wooded areas that characterize the hills between Cressa and the surrounding hamlets. The rolling terrain and varied surfaces make the route pleasant and dynamic, appreciated by runners for its hilly nature while remaining accessible to walkers. For those seeking a more relaxed experience, there is also a short 2 km route, ideal for children and those who simply want to enjoy a walk in good company.

A local community event

Beyond the sporting aspect, the Cressalonga is above all a community celebration: the meeting point at the parish oratory, the refreshment stations along the route, and the convivial atmosphere are all part of the charm of this event, which draws runners from across the Novara region and beyond every spring.
