The 10 km road race in honor of the patron saint of Marano di Napoli
The Corri per San Castrese is an annual road race that brings together hundreds of runners in the town of Marano di Napoli, in the province of Naples, located in the densely populated area north of the Campanian capital. Launched in 2024 by the San Castrese Parish, it has quickly established itself as one of the most popular events on the Campania running calendar. Its deep local roots are reflected in its name: San Castrese is the patron saint of Marano, celebrated on February 11th, and the race extends a long-standing local devotion onto the asphalt.
The start and finish lines are located in front of the Casa della Gioia, the parish's multipurpose pastoral center at Via Padreterno 24. From there, the route winds for approximately 10 kilometers along the main arteries and neighborhoods of Marano: Corso Umberto, Corso Mediterraneo, Corso Europa, Corso Italia, Via Colombo, Via Falcone, Via Baracca, Via Piave, Via Lazio, and Via Tagliamento are among the streets closed to traffic for the occasion. It is not a record-breaking course; participants describe it as technical and demanding, with challenging climbs, tricky descents, and long straights that reward those who pace themselves well. Recent editions have measured the course between 9.9 and 10.4 kilometers, depending on the variations used.
The event's format is intentionally inclusive. Alongside the competitive race, which is timed and reserved for registered athletes, there is a non-competitive run open to everyone, even those just wishing to support the cause. Proceeds from registrations and the event's raffle are entirely donated to the parish's charitable works: this is the true heart of the event, which organizers describe as a combination of solidarity and charity.
The Corri per San Castrese is more than just a race; it is a morning when an entire city pauses and takes to the streets. Running clubs arrive from all over Campania—thirty-eight were represented in the 2026 edition—joined by families, parish groups, and curious locals lining the route. For a community that has faced difficult times in recent years, the event has taken on a civic significance: local press has hailed it as a sign of a town looking toward the future.
Since its second edition, the race has been plastic-free, with refreshment stations avoiding single-use plastics—a choice the organizers claim was the first of its kind in Campanian road racing. The event also features participation medals for all finishers, official timing, category awards, and a raffle with prizes provided by local businesses.
The race is held on a spring Sunday morning, starting around 8:00 AM. The first three editions took place on March 10, 2024, March 30, 2025, and March 15, 2026. The exact date is announced annually by the parish, along with the municipal ordinance closing the affected streets, typically from 7:30 AM to 9:00 AM.
On Sunday, March 15, 2026, Marano di Napoli hosted the third Corri per San Castrese, organized by the San Castrese Parish with the technical collaboration of the Centro Sportivo Italiano of Naples and the patronage of the Municipality. The meeting point was the Casa della Gioia, at Via Padreterno 24, from where the race started at 8:00 AM.
437 athletes crossed the finish line—373 men and 64 women—representing 38 running clubs from across Campania. Among the men, Andrea Staffieri won, finishing the 9.9-kilometer timed course in 34'23". Among the women, the fastest was Anna Trinchillo (International Security Service) in 42'45", ahead of Annamaria Capasso (Amatori Vesuvio, 43'22"), Tiziana Ricciardi (Napoli Nord Marathon, 44'21"), Beatrice Shirin Khosravi (Atletica Macasport, 45'39"), and Fabiana Chirico (Amatori Vesuvio, 45'55").
The course, measured by some participants at approximately 10.4 kilometers, crossed the city's main arteries: Via Padreterno, Via Labriola, Corso Umberto, Via Che Guevara, Corso Mediterraneo, Via Colombo, Via Baracca, Corso Europa, Via Falcone, Via Musella, Via Arafat, Via Emilia, Via Piave, Via Lazio, Corso Italia, and Via Tagliamento. Steep climbs and long straights made the race more selective than expected.
In 2026, the event once again combined competition with charity: proceeds from registrations and the lottery were donated to the parish's charitable works. During a delicate time for the city's administration, the race was described by the local press as a moment of cohesion for the Marano community around its patron saint.
Streets affected by closures: Via Padreterno, Via Labriola, Corso Umberto, Via Che Guevara, Corso Mediterraneo, Via Colombo, Via Baracca, Corso Europa, Via Falcone, Via Musella, Via Arafat, Via Emilia, Via Piave, Via Lazio, Corso Italia, Via Tagliamento.
Start and finish at the Casa della Gioia, Via Padreterno 24, 80016 Marano di Napoli (NA), Campania. The route runs entirely within the town center.
Marano di Napoli is located a few kilometers northwest of Naples and is accessible by car via the main roads connecting the capital to the Phlegraean area and the northern hinterland. On race morning, several city center streets are closed to traffic, usually from 7:30 AM to 9:00 AM; it is advisable to arrive early and park in streets adjacent to the route.
Registrations are handled by the San Castrese Parish. Contacts: email [email protected], phone 081 7420502, website www.sancastrese.org. In recent editions, the contact persons for registration were Franco Longobardi (338 9898848), Salvatore Catuogno (338 7538521), and Nicola Moio (392 0601224).
The route is urban but far from flat: it is best to plan a thorough warm-up and wear shoes suitable for asphalt. Those not running can participate in the non-competitive event or support the initiative by purchasing a charity raffle ticket.
