The solemn city-wide Eucharistic procession from San Domenico to the Cathedral
The Corpus Domini Procession is one of the most deeply rooted and well-attended religious celebrations in the liturgical calendar of Palermo. The solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ, which the Church celebrates on the Sunday following the feast of the Most Holy Trinity, culminates in a great city-wide Eucharistic procession that traverses the heart of the Sicilian capital, from the Basilica of San Domenico to the Cathedral.
The celebration is divided into two main moments. In the morning, around 11:00 AM, the Archbishop of Palermo, Monsignor Corrado Lorefice, presides over the solemn Pontifical Mass in the Basilica of San Domenico, followed by the exposition of the Most Holy Sacrament. The church remains open throughout the day for personal prayer by the faithful.
In the evening, around 7:00 PM, the Second Solemn Vespers are celebrated, followed by the Eucharistic Procession presided over by the Archbishop. The procession moves from San Domenico and reaches the Cathedral, where the prelate delivers his message and imparts the Eucharistic blessing.
To encourage participation in the procession, only morning masses are celebrated throughout the city of Palermo on the afternoon of the solemnity, and churches remain closed: a powerful sign that draws the entire diocesan community to the historic center. Priests, religious communities, lay confraternities, associations, and parishes of the Archdiocese take part in the procession, in a parade that intertwines popular devotion and solemn liturgy.
The route passes through some of the symbolic sites of Palermo's historic center, among monumental streets and squares, up to the parvis of the majestic Cathedral, a masterpiece of UNESCO-listed Norman-Arab-Byzantine architecture. The Basilica of San Domenico, known as the Pantheon of Sicily's illustrious men, serves as the ideal starting point for this journey of faith.
Set in the heart of the summer season, the Corpus Domini Procession represents a moment of profound spirituality and public witness of faith for Palermo and the Archdiocese. The celebration is also followed via the diocesan radio broadcast, a sign of an event that involves not only the Municipality of Palermo but the entire ecclesial community of the Sicily Region.
The 2026 Solemnity of Corpus Domini was celebrated in Palermo on Sunday, June 7. At 11:00 AM, in the Basilica of San Domenico, Archbishop Monsignor Corrado Lorefice presided over the solemn Pontifical Mass, followed by the exposition of the Most Holy Sacrament, with the church remaining open all day for personal prayer.
At 7:00 PM, the Second Solemn Vespers were celebrated, followed by the Eucharistic Procession presided over by the Archbishop, from the Basilica of San Domenico to the Cathedral. To encourage participation, only morning masses were celebrated throughout the city in the afternoon, and churches remained closed.
The procession starts from the Basilica of San Domenico (Piazza San Domenico, historic center of Palermo) and reaches the Cathedral of Palermo. Both churches are in the heart of the old city, easily reachable on foot.
The historic center of Palermo is well served by public transport (AMAT buses) and the commuter rail line stations. It is advisable to leave your car in peripheral parking lots, as several streets in the center are closed to traffic during the procession.
The celebrations are free to enter and open to all the faithful. The live broadcast of the Vespers and the procession is transmitted by the diocesan radio.
