About Corpus Domini Palermo

The Solemnity of Corpus Domini is one of the most deeply felt spiritual events in Palermo. Each year, on the Sunday following the Most Holy Trinity, the Archbishop presides over the Pontifical Mass at the Basilica of San Domenico and leads the great city-wide Eucharistic procession through the historic center to the Cathedral. A crowd of faithful, confraternities, religious communities, and parishes of the Archdiocese accompanies the Most Holy Sacrament in a procession of faith and tradition that unites the entire city.

The Solemnity of Corpus Domini in Palermo

The Corpus Domini Procession is one of the most deeply rooted and well-attended religious celebrations in the liturgical calendar of Palermo. The solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ, which the Church celebrates on the Sunday following the feast of the Most Holy Trinity, culminates in a great city-wide Eucharistic procession that traverses the heart of the Sicilian capital, from the Basilica of San Domenico to the Cathedral.

The day's program

The celebration is divided into two main moments. In the morning, around 11:00 AM, the Archbishop of Palermo, Monsignor Corrado Lorefice, presides over the solemn Pontifical Mass in the Basilica of San Domenico, followed by the exposition of the Most Holy Sacrament. The church remains open throughout the day for personal prayer by the faithful.

In the evening, around 7:00 PM, the Second Solemn Vespers are celebrated, followed by the Eucharistic Procession presided over by the Archbishop. The procession moves from San Domenico and reaches the Cathedral, where the prelate delivers his message and imparts the Eucharistic blessing.

A tradition that unites the city

To encourage participation in the procession, only morning masses are celebrated throughout the city of Palermo on the afternoon of the solemnity, and churches remain closed: a powerful sign that draws the entire diocesan community to the historic center. Priests, religious communities, lay confraternities, associations, and parishes of the Archdiocese take part in the procession, in a parade that intertwines popular devotion and solemn liturgy.

The route through the historic center

The route passes through some of the symbolic sites of Palermo's historic center, among monumental streets and squares, up to the parvis of the majestic Cathedral, a masterpiece of UNESCO-listed Norman-Arab-Byzantine architecture. The Basilica of San Domenico, known as the Pantheon of Sicily's illustrious men, serves as the ideal starting point for this journey of faith.

An appointment for Christian Sicily

Set in the heart of the summer season, the Corpus Domini Procession represents a moment of profound spirituality and public witness of faith for Palermo and the Archdiocese. The celebration is also followed via the diocesan radio broadcast, a sign of an event that involves not only the Municipality of Palermo but the entire ecclesial community of the Sicily Region.
