The silver galley of the sailors parades through the streets of Messina on Corpus Domini
In the municipality of Messina, the capital of the province of the same name in Sicily, the solemnity of Corpus Domini has been linked for centuries to one of the city's most cherished popular traditions: the Vascelluzzo Pageant. The day begins with the Eucharistic celebration in the Cathedral, followed by the procession of the Blessed Sacrament through the main streets of the historic center. Once the Eucharistic procession concludes, it is time for the Vascelluzzo, which the citizens await with devotion all along the route.
The Vascelluzzo (in the Messinese dialect Vascedduzzu) is a fine three-masted galley, about one meter long, consisting of a wooden core covered in finely chiseled silver sheets. Its creation is attributed to a workshop of silversmiths active between the late 16th and 18th centuries. The artifact is jealously guarded throughout the year by the Confraternity of Santa Maria di Portosalvo dei Marinai at the church of the same name, and is carried in procession only once a year, specifically on the occasion of Corpus Domini.
The tradition of the Vascelluzzo has its roots in two historical episodes linked to the city's salvation. The oldest dates back to 1302, when Messina, besieged by the Duke of Calabria, was exhausted by hunger: according to legend, thanks to the pleas addressed to the Madonna by the monk Alberto of the Pozzoleone convent, ships loaded with grain miraculously arrived in the port to save the people of Messina. A second episode is placed in the early 17th century, around 1603, when a terrible famine threatened the population and the providential arrival of wheat by sea was interpreted as a received grace.
In memory of these rescues, the Vascelluzzo is covered with wheat stalks, a symbolic gesture that recalls divine providence and the city's gratitude toward the Madonna. At the end of the pageant, it is tradition for small loaves and sheaves of wheat to be distributed to the faithful as a sign of blessing and thanksgiving.
The Corpus Domini procession starts from Piazza Duomo and crosses Corso Cavour, Piazza Antonello, Via Consolato del Mare, Via Garibaldi, and Via I Settembre, before returning to Piazza Duomo. The Vascelluzzo Pageant also moves from Piazza Duomo, traveling along Corso Cavour, Piazza Unitร d'Italia, Via San Giovanni di Malta, Via Monsignor D'Arrigo, Via Santa Maria dell'Arco, and Via Chiesa dei Marinai, until it reaches the church of Santa Maria di Portosalvo dei Marinai.
Blending faith, history, and folklore, the Vascelluzzo Pageant represents one of the most authentic testimonies of Messina's religious and maritime identity. Every year, the event attracts citizens, the faithful, and visitors who crowd the historic center to witness the passing of the silver galley and participate in a ritual that spans the centuries.
On Sunday, June 7, 2026, at 7:30 PM, Messina celebrated the solemnity of Corpus Domini with the traditional procession of the Blessed Sacrament, which departed from Piazza Duomo. Following this, the Confraternity of Santa Maria di Portosalvo dei Marinai carried the Vascelluzzoโthe silver simulacrum covered in wheat stalksโalong the route leading from Piazza Duomo to the sailors' church, passing through Corso Cavour, Piazza Unitร d'Italia, and the streets of the historic center.
The church of Santa Maria di Portosalvo dei Marinai remained open to the faithful from 6:00 PM to 11:00 PM. For the event, the Municipality implemented traffic changes along the pageant routes.
It takes place on the day of Corpus Domini, generally in the second half of June, in the late afternoon and evening.
