Floral carpets for Corpus Domini in a village in the province of Messina
The Corpus Domini Flower Festival in San Pier Niceto, a small town in the province of Messina overlooking the Sicilian Tyrrhenian coast, is one of the most cherished religious and artistic events in the region. On the occasion of the Corpus Domini solemnity, the historic center comes alive: master florists and hundreds of volunteers create a long carpet of sacred-themed mosaics, composed of flowers, petals, leaves, rice, coffee, and colored sawdust.
What makes the Niceto flower festival famous is its extraordinary length: the floral path winds through the town's streets, earning it the title—claimed by the organizers—of one of the longest flower festivals in the world. The sketches, prepared in the preceding months, come to life in the hours leading up to the feast, as entire families and associations work side-by-side to shape a masterpiece destined to last only a few hours, until the procession passes.
The Flower Festival is, first and foremost, an act of popular devotion linked to the feast of Corpus Domini. The event is organized by the Pro Loco Niceto in collaboration with the municipal administration and the local parish, involving the entire community in a grand collective effort that strengthens the town's bonds. The highlight is the solemn Eucharistic procession which, after Holy Mass, traverses the flower-covered streets of the historic center.
The 29th edition, scheduled for June 6 and 7, 2026, is dedicated to Saint Francis of Assisi on the 800th anniversary of his passing, linking the floral carpets to the universal message of the Canticle of the Creatures. The days alternate between entertainment and religious celebrations, in an atmosphere that draws visitors from all over Sicily and the nearby metropolitan area of Messina.
