Petal carpets and ephemeral art in the heart of the Ciociaria region
Every year, the village of Cervaro, in the province of Frosinone in southern Lazio, dresses up in color thanks to the Corpus Domini Flower Festival, one of the most deeply felt traditions in the Ciociaria region. The streets and squares of the historic center turn into a true open-air museum, where infioratori (flower artists) create large carpets made from flower petals, leaves, seeds, and natural materials. It is ephemeral art in its purest form: works destined to last only a few hours, the time of the procession, but capable of leaving an indelible memory.
The custom of covering the procession route with flowers dates back to 1949, when, in the post-war period, the faithful began throwing petals as the Blessed Sacrament passed by. Over time, that devotional gesture evolved into a refined form of popular art, now preserved by the «Infiorata di Cervaro» Historical-Cultural-Artistic Association APS, established in 1999 and a member of Infioritalia, the national association of Italian flower festivals. In 2026, the Corpus Domini event reaches its seventieth edition, testifying to the continuity of a passion passed down from generation to generation.
The Cervaro event is divided into two distinct moments. At the beginning of May, the Masters' Flower Festival Review takes place, a national and international event that brings together numerous groups from all over Italy and abroad, including the participation of Polish flower artists from Spycimierz. On Corpus Domini Sunday, however, the actual Flower Festival takes center stage, with floral displays on exclusively religious themes accompanying the procession along the town's streets.
A rich program of side events develops around the flower carpets: costumed pageants, theatrical performances, folk songs, live music, street artists, exhibitions, and stalls featuring local products. The stands offer the gastronomic specialties of the Ciociaria region, while vintage car shows and craft markets complete the experience. It is an opportunity to discover an authentic village in Lazio, at the gates of Cassino and at the foot of the mountains that mark the border with Campania.
2026 marked an important year for the Corpus Domini Flower Festival of Cervaro, which reached its seventieth edition. The 6th Masters' Flower Festival Review (May 1-3) brought numerous Italian and foreign groups to the town, while the actual Corpus Domini Flower Festival was held on Sunday, June 7, with eight religious-themed floral displays arranged along the streets of the historic center.
About fifteen groups from all over Italy (including Alatri, Aprilia, Castelraimondo, Cusano Mutri, Fucecchio, Gerano, Genazzano, Montefiore dell'Aso, Norma, Pietra Ligure, Poggio Moiano, Sutri, and Vignanello) and from Poland (Spycimierz) took part in the review.
By car: Cervaro can be reached via the A1 Milan-Naples motorway, taking the Cassino exit, just a few kilometers from the center. By train: the reference station is Cassino, on the Rome-Naples line via Cassino, connected to Cervaro by short car or bus rides. By plane: the nearest airports are Rome (Ciampino and Fiumicino) and Naples.
The event takes place in the historic center and access is free. The Corpus Domini floral carpets can be admired in their completed form starting from the late afternoon, before the evening procession. It is recommended to wear comfortable shoes and arrive in good time, as some streets in the center are closed to traffic during the event.
