Petal carpets adorning the ancient village for the Corpus Domini solemnity
In the heart of the Alto Vastese region, perched among the hills of the province of Chieti, the medieval village of Carunchio has just over six hundred inhabitants. Yet, once a year, this small town in inland Abruzzo becomes the star of one of the most evocative religious and artistic events in the region: the Corpus Domini Flower Festival. For the solemnity that falls on the Sunday following the feast of the Most Holy Trinity, the streets and alleys of the historic center are transformed into an immense carpet of colors.
What makes the Carunchio Flower Festival unique is its creation technique. The Eucharistic and religious-themed designs are composed directly on the cobblestones using exclusively shredded petals and leaves, without any chemical agents, preservatives, or artificial dyes. Every petal, every leaf, and every shade of color is placed with care and dedication. The preparation requires many hours of work: the younger residents create the designs, while the elderly prepare the petals, sorted by shade. It is a deeply collective moment, where a large number of people work with enthusiasm and patience.
The highlight of the day is the solemn procession of the Blessed Sacrament, which, following the Eucharistic celebration, winds through the village, passing over the floral carpets. The procession thus blesses the village and the devotion of those who created the works. Altars, drapes, and floral displays accompany the route in a blend of faith, art, and popular tradition that is renewed from generation to generation.
The event is organized by the entire community of Carunchio: the Parish, the Municipality, and various local associations, with the involvement of the Confraternity of the Blessed Sacrament. The goal of the event is to keep the deep religious faith in the Eucharist and the cultural prestige of the village alive, while spreading new meanings of friendship between peoples. It is no coincidence that Carunchio is twinned with the town of Saluda, North Carolina, whose residents organize a trip dedicated to this flower festival every year.
Visiting Carunchio during the Flower Festival means discovering an authentic Abruzzo, made of small villages that proudly guard their traditions. The historic center, which developed between the 12th and 13th centuries around the Palazzo Castelli-Tour d'Eau, offers a setting of rare charm: narrow stone alleys, panoramic views of the hills, and an intimate atmosphere that maximizes the spectacle of the floral carpets. It is the poetry of small places, whose voice refuses to resign itself to silence.
On Sunday, June 7, 2026, Carunchio renewed its appointment with the Corpus Domini Flower Festival. From the early hours of the morning, village volunteers composed Eucharistic and religious-themed designs on the historic center's pavement using exclusively shredded petals and leaves. In the late afternoon, the Eucharistic celebration culminated in the procession of the Blessed Sacrament along the floral route, in the presence of the local community and visitors who arrived from the twinned town of Saluda.
Carunchio is located in the hinterland of the province of Chieti, in Abruzzo. By car, it can be reached from the Vasto Sud exit (A14 motorway), continuing inland along the Fondovalle Trigno and the provincial roads that climb towards the Alto Vastese. The nearest train station is Vasto-San Salvo, from where you can continue by car.
The event is held on the occasion of the solemnity of Corpus Domini, which falls on the Sunday following the feast of the Most Holy Trinity (usually between late May and June).
The flower festival is created throughout the day, from morning until late afternoon; it is advisable to arrive in time to witness both the composition of the carpets and the evening procession. Free admission. Comfortable shoes are recommended for the stone alleys of the historic center.
