The historical re-enactment of the medieval origins of Fraine

Fragine Medievale is a historical re-enactment that recounts the ancient origins of Fraine, a small village in the province of Chieti, in the heart of the Sangro Vastese mountain community in Abruzzo. Every year, on an August evening, the village's historic center transforms into an open-air stage where history, culture, and gastronomy intertwine to revive the atmosphere of the Middle Ages.
The event's very name is rooted in local history: Fraine derives from "Fragine," a term linked to the Latin verb frangere, referring to the ancient quarries in the area from which stones were extracted for floors, fireplaces, and stairs. The village's origins date back at least to the 12th century, and its ancient heart still preserves traces of a fortified village with a tower. It is in this setting that the Pro Loco association decided to create a re-enactment capable of restoring the memory of their roots to the community.
The central moment of the event is the historical pageant: a parade of costumed performers accompanied by flag-wavers sets off from Largo Santa Maria, crossing the village streets until reaching the Mother Church in Piano della Torre. Here, the Vassalage ceremony takes place—a ritual that reconstructs the bonds of loyalty typical of feudal society and represents the symbolic heart of the event.
After the re-enactment, the festivities continue late into the night with the opening of food stalls, where visitors can taste traditional Abruzzese peasant dishes. There is no shortage of live music, which accompanies the evening and enlivens the village streets in a convivial atmosphere.
Having become one of the most well-known and appreciated historical re-enactments in the Vasto area over the years, Fragine Medievale experienced a period of suspension due to the depopulation affecting many inland villages. Thanks to the efforts of the Pro Loco Fraine, led by president Giacomo Di Pasquale, the event has been relaunched in a renewed and streamlined form, capable of preserving the historical and identity-based value of the event and bringing the community back together around its traditions.
The dates for the 2026 edition of Fragine Medievale have not yet been announced. The event, organized by Pro Loco Fraine, usually takes place in August in the village of Fraine, in the province of Chieti (Abruzzo). The program traditionally includes a historical procession with costumed performers and flag-wavers, the Vassalage ceremony, food stalls with traditional dishes, and live music. It is recommended to check the Pro Loco channels for the date and program as soon as they become available.
The event takes place in the historic center of Fraine (province of Chieti, Abruzzo), with the procession starting from Largo Santa Maria and arriving at the Mother Church in Piano della Torre.
Fraine can be reached by car from the Vasto coast by heading inland through the Sangro Vastese region. The most convenient train station is Vasto-San Salvo, on the Adriatic line, from which you can continue by car towards the interior.
The event takes place in the village streets and is free to attend; food stalls offer traditional dishes for purchase.
The event is organized by the Pro Loco Fraine.
