The patronal festival of the Alto Vastese village, blending devotion and tradition
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
Perched at an altitude of 714 meters on a hill in the Alto Vastese, the medieval village of Carunchio, in the province of Chieti, dedicates its annual mid-August patronal feast to its two protectors: Saint Anthony Abbot, celebrated on August 18th, and Saint Vincent Ferrer, honored the following day. It is one of the most cherished events for the community, a time in the heart of summer when locals reconnect with their roots through a celebration where popular religiosity meets conviviality and hospitality.
The heart of the festival lies in the processions that accompany the statues of the saints along the narrow streets of the historic center. Liturgical celebrations move from the churches into the public square, becoming collective rituals of prayer, song, and reflection that allow the faithful to live their faith in the village's public space. The devotional tradition in Carunchio has been guarded for centuries, particularly by the Confraternity of the Blessed Sacrament, which supports the community in organizing the patronal festivities.
Documented for the first time in 1173 in a papal bull, Carunchio preserves a fascinating urban layout. Among its most significant monuments are the Church of Saint John the Baptist, featuring a baroque stone portal and a late 17th-century organ; the Church of Saint Anthony, known as the "Purgatory Church," which houses traces of medieval frescoes; and the small Church of Saint Lucy, linked to an ancient local legend. Walking through the alleys during the festival means immersing oneself in the authentic soul of inland Abruzzo.
The patronal feast takes place during a particularly vibrant August in Carunchio, which in the preceding days also features the famous Ventricina del Vastese, the traditional salami for which Carunchio is considered one of the finest artisanal producers, even hosting the Ventricina Academy. Devotion, folklore, and gastronomy thus paint a complete portrait of this village in the municipality of Carunchio, in the heart of the Apennine Abruzzo.
Those who attend the Carunchio patronal feast discover an experiential travel dimension far from mass tourism: welcoming communities, rituals passed down through generations, and a mountain landscape that makes mid-summer evenings in the hinterland of Chieti province even more evocative.
The dates and program for the 2026 edition of the patronal feast of Carunchio have not yet been released. As per established tradition, the community of Carunchio celebrates Saint Anthony Abbot on August 18th and Saint Vincent Ferrer on August 19th, with processions and devotional rites in the historic center of the village, in the province of Chieti. It is recommended to check for updated information from the Municipality of Carunchio and the organizing committee as the summer approaches.
Carunchio can be reached by car from the Vasto Sud motorway exit (A14), heading inland towards the Alto Vastese along the SS86 and provincial roads. The nearest train station is Vasto-San Salvo, from which you can continue by local bus or rental car.
The festival traditionally takes place on August 18th (Saint Anthony Abbot) and August 19th (Saint Vincent Ferrer). The dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been officially announced.
The village is at an altitude of 714 meters: on summer evenings, a warmer layer of clothing may be useful. Pair the festival with a tasting of Ventricina del Vastese at local producers.
