The solemn procession of the Blessed Sacrament through the streets of Mugnano del Cardinale
The solemnity of Corpus Domini is one of the most cherished religious events in Mugnano del Cardinale, a town in the Province of Avellino, Campania. Every year, on the Sunday dedicated to the Blessed Sacrament, the town pauses to accompany the Monstrance through the streets: a ritual that weaves together devotion, local identity, and family memory, involving the parish, confraternities, associations, and residents alike.
The Sanctuary of Santa Filomena serves as the starting and ending point of the procession. As the town's primary place of worship and a pilgrimage site known far beyond the borders of Irpinia, it is here that the procession forms in the afternoon and where the solemn Mass is celebrated upon its return. The presence of the Sanctuary gives the day a unique significance: it is not merely a local festival, but an event that draws worshippers from the neighboring towns of the Baianese and Nola areas.
In the afternoon, the Blessed Sacrament is carried in procession along the main streets of the town center in an atmosphere of deep reflection and popular devotion. In recent years, the route has remained consistent, starting and ending at the Sanctuary, passing through:
Each year, the parish invites the faithful to participate with devotion and to decorate balconies and streets along the route: drapes, flowers, and colorful fabrics transform the facades into a series of outdoor altars, following a custom typical of Eucharistic processions in Southern Italy.
At the end of the route, once the Monstrance has returned to the Sanctuary, a solemn Eucharistic celebration is held, followed by the blessing with the Blessed Sacrament. This is the concluding moment of the day, where the communal dimension of the feast is restored within the church after having traversed the streets where people live their daily lives.
Corpus Domini is the Catholic feast celebrating the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist. In Italy, it is celebrated on the Sunday following the solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity; therefore, it falls on a movable date between late May and June, according to the Easter calendar. In Southern Italian towns, the procession with the Monstrance through the streets is the most widespread and ancient form of this celebration, as carrying the Sacrament outside the church symbolically means traversing the daily life of the community.
Mugnano del Cardinale lies at the foot of the Partenio massif, in the western part of the Province of Avellino, just a few kilometers from the border with the Nola area. The town is best known for the cult of Santa Filomena, whose relics have been kept in the Sanctuary since 1805. Over time, the religious identity of the village has been built around this devotion, with Corpus Domini being one of its key events alongside the feast of Santa Filomena.
Participation is free and open to all, with no reservation required. Visitors arriving from out of town are advised to reach the Sanctuary slightly ahead of the procession's start time to find parking in the surrounding streets, as traffic in the center is inevitably slowed during the event. As this is a religious celebration, modest attire and respectful behavior are requested throughout the route.
The parish community of Mugnano del Cardinale celebrated the solemnity of Corpus Domini on Sunday, June 7, 2026. The central moment of the day was the procession of the Blessed Sacrament, which departed at 5:30 PM from the Sanctuary of Santa Filomena.
For the third consecutive year, the route followed that of previous editions, starting and returning to the Sanctuary. The procession passed through Via Mancini, Via Nazionale, Via San Silvestro, Via Nicola Pistelli, Via Luigi Sturzo, Via Montessori, Via Valle, Via Tenente D'Andrea, and Via Carlucci, before returning along Via Nazionale and Viale De Lucia.
Numerous citizens, associations, and confraternities took part in the procession. The parish had invited the faithful to participate with devotion and to decorate balconies and streets along the route, in accordance with a deeply felt custom in the towns of the Province of Avellino.
At the end of the procession, a solemn Eucharistic celebration was held, followed by the blessing with the Blessed Sacrament, concluding one of the most attended days of faith of the year in Mugnano del Cardinale.
