The Alburni village celebrates its white bean, a Slow Food Presidium

Some festivals are born from a promotional idea, while others grow naturally from a product. The Controne Bean Festival undoubtedly belongs to the latter category: for over forty years, the Municipality of Controne, a small town in the province of Salerno overlooking the Calore valley, has dedicated the final stretch of autumn to its white bean. In 2025, the event reached its 41st edition, following the 40th in 2024 and the 37th in 2019—numbers that reflect a rare continuity in the landscape of popular festivals in Campania.
The event traditionally falls on the last weekend of November, when the harvest has just concluded and the beans arrive on the table in their finest form. In recent years, the municipal administration has experimented with a two-weekend format, adding a second appointment during the Christmas period to the late November date.
The star is a white ecotype with small, round, spotless seeds, recognized as a Slow Food Presidium. Its characteristics are known well beyond the borders of Cilento: an extremely thin skin, high digestibility, short cooking times, and no need for prolonged soaking. This is thanks to the soil—a stratification rich in carbonates at the foot of the Alburni Mountains—and the abundant spring water flowing from the massif.
Cultivation takes place on small, scattered plots within the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park, using eco-friendly methods. Local tradition traces the arrival of the legume in the Calore valley back to the first half of the 16th century, when it was cultivated by the Benedictine monks of the Abbey of San Nicola. Alongside the bean, the festival also promotes the extra virgin olive oil produced in the village from native cultivars.
The heart of the festival is the food and wine trail that winds through the village: taverns are set up in the cellars, alleys, and courtyards of the houses, each offering a different preparation. Recent editions have featured stations dedicated to:
Applications for taverns are collected by the Municipality via a public notice, and the proposed dishes are evaluated by a special commission before authorization: a filter that ensures adherence to the traditions of Cilento and the Alburni area.
The festival is about more than just food. In recent editions, the program has alternated between folk music groups from the South—such as Popolo Vascio, Echi del Mediterraneo, and 'A Paranza d'o' Tramuntan—dance workshops, re-enactments, guided tours of the village, and olive oil tastings. There has been no shortage of guests from the world of Neapolitan and Salernitan pizza and pastry, invited to engage with the legume of the Alburni.
Controne has only a few hundred inhabitants, and for two weekends a year, it fills with visitors from all over Campania. It is one of the best opportunities to understand how a rural community in the Salerno hinterland functions: you eat standing up or on wooden benches, buy beans directly from the producers, and stroll among the stone houses with the scent of wood fires and fresh oil in the air. A festival model where the Campania Region finds its most authentic dimension, far from the tourist routes of the coast.
As of our research, the Municipality of Controne has not yet released the official dates for the 2026 edition of the Bean Festival, nor the public notice for tavern participation. Festival calendars in Campania place the event in the usual window of late November - early December 2026, consistent with the village's tradition, but without specifying exact days.
In recent editions, the event has been spread over two weekends: one in late November, in the classic format, and one during the Christmas period. However, it is not confirmed that this format will be repeated in 2026.
The format is well-established: taverns set up in the cellars and courtyards of the historic center, dishes based on the Controne white bean—a Slow Food Presidium—local extra virgin olive oil, folk music, and visits to the village. As soon as the Municipality publishes the calendar and detailed program, we will update this page.

Controne (SA) is located in the Calore valley, at the foot of the Alburni Mountains, about 60 km from Salerno. By car: A2 Autostrada del Mediterraneo, exit at Sicignano degli Alburni or Campagna, then take the SS19 and provincial roads towards Postiglione-Controne. The most convenient train station is Battipaglia, connected to Salerno and Naples; from there, continue by car or via the Cilento bus lines.
The village is small and the historic center is pedestrian-only during the event: parking is available in designated areas at the entrance to the village, and you continue on foot. Comfortable shoes are recommended for the uphill alleys.
In recent editions, entry to the village and the event has been free; you only pay for what you consume at the individual taverns, with portions at popular prices. During the festival days, it is possible to purchase Controne beans directly from local producers.
The festival takes place in late autumn: the temperature in the village can be chilly, especially in the evening. It is best to arrive early, as queues in front of the taverns can get quite long during peak hours.
