The Contrade of Asciano welcome the historic steam train to the heart of the Crete Senesi
In Asciano, a village in the Crete Senesi area near Siena, the arrival of the Treno Natura is more than just a train stop: it is a true village festival. The Contrade Day is organized by the Associazione Contrade Asciano in conjunction with the historic steam train's journey along the scenic Val d'Orcia railway line, transforming the town center into a stage for tradition, local flavors, and hospitality.
The Treno Natura travels along the historic railway line that runs from Siena through the Crete Senesi to the Val d'Orcia, a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is a vintage train, pulled by a steam locomotive and composed of 1930s "Centoporte" carriages, restored thanks to the Fondazione FS Italiane and the Associazione Ferrovia Val d'Orcia. When the train stops in Asciano, the local Contrade are ready to welcome it: its arrival, around noon, is the most anticipated moment of the day.
From the morning, the historic center of Asciano comes alive with a craft and local produce market, showcasing the craftsmanship and culinary excellence of the Crete Senesi. By mid-morning, the food stall opens with local specialties, as the day is also a journey through the flavors of Sienese cuisine. For those who enjoy walking, the "La Strada dell'Anima" (Path of the Soul) walk leads participants along the Via Lauretana, an ancient route that crosses the clay hills typical of this corner of Tuscany.
The afternoon is dedicated to traditional games between the Contrade, a moment of challenge and fun that renews the spirit of belonging typical of Tuscan communities, following the great Sienese tradition. To close the festival, wandering music fills the streets of the village, involving residents and visitors in a joyful and convivial atmosphere.
On the occasion of the Contrade Day, Asciano opens its two main museums with continuous hours: the Palazzo Corboli Museum, a precious treasure chest of Sienese art and archaeology, and the Cassioli Museum, dedicated to 19th-century painting. An extra opportunity to discover the cultural heritage of this municipality in the province of Siena.
The Contrade Day in Asciano is the ideal experience for those who want to enjoy Tuscany away from the most crowded routes: the slow charm of the steam train, the lunar landscapes of the Crete Senesi, the authenticity of a village festival, and the hospitality of the Contrade. A free event that encapsulates history, nature, gastronomy, and tradition in a single day.
The May 10, 2026 edition of the Contrade Day in Asciano welcomed the Treno Natura along the historic Val d'Orcia line.
