International chess tournament in the Chiese Valley
The Condino Borgo Chiese International Chess Open is one of the longest-running chess events in Trentino. Every summer, the Condino Congress Centre, located on Via Roma in the municipality of Borgo Chiese (Autonomous Province of Trento, Trentino-Alto Adige region), transforms into a grand playing hall where dozens of chess players face off across the sixty-four squares. Now in its twenty-fourth edition, the tournament is organised by the Comitato Organizzatore Manifestazioni Scacchistiche, the Arco-based group (known as Arco World Chess) that has managed the region's main open tournaments for years, from the famous Arco City Festival to events throughout the Giudicarie valleys.
The format is the classic Italian open: FIDE Swiss system valid for Elo rating changes, with a long time control (90 minutes plus a 30-second increment per move). Access is open to FSI members, resident foreign players, and competitors from all over Italy and abroad, in an atmosphere that blends serious competition with a convivial spirit. Alongside the main open, recent editions have featured initiatives dedicated to younger players, with tournaments reserved for junior categories.
The choice of Condino is no coincidence: the Chiese Valley, at the south-western tip of Trentino, offers participants a week of chess immersed in an alpine setting, between Lake Idro, the Brenta Dolomites, and the trails of the Giudicarie. For many chess players, the Condino tournament has become a summer tradition, an opportunity to combine competitive play with the discovery of an authentic territory in Trentino-Alto Adige.
With its intimate atmosphere and the consistency of over twenty years of editions, the Condino Open remains a reference point for chess enthusiasts in Trentino and beyond.
