The historic night-time road race in the heart of Florence, under the stars and among the monuments
The Conad Notturna di San Giovanni is much more than just a race: it is a tradition that has been renewed in Florence without interruption since 1938, making it one of the oldest and most prestigious road races in Italy. Part of the official calendar of celebrations for Saint John the Baptist, the patron saint of Florence, the event combines sport, history, and civic devotion into a single June evening, when the Tuscan capital honors its saint with a historical pageant, a floral display, and the famous "Fochi" fireworks at Piazzale Michelangelo.
What makes this race unforgettable is the setting: it starts at 9:00 PM from the steps of the Duomo in Piazza San Giovanni, right next to the Baptistery and the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore. The 9.9 km course winds through the most evocative streets and squares of the historic center, closed to traffic and illuminated for the occasion: from the Via Calzaiuoli gallery to Piazza della Signoria, along the Lungarni to Piazza dei Cavalleggeri, then back up towards Piazza Sant'Ambrogio, Borgo la Croce, and the elegant Piazza d'Azeglio, before returning to the finish line in front of the Duomo. Running among these illuminated monuments in the silence of the Florentine night is an experience that attracts around 2,000 runners from all over Italy every year.
The event, organized by Maratona di Firenze SSDRL, offers three formats designed for every type of participant:
The Notturna is a collective event that involves the entire community: every year, about 300 volunteers take to the field, while stalls and side events come to life along the route and at the finish line. The race is one of the most heartfelt moments of the celebrations that accompany the patron saint's feast day in the Municipality of Florence and throughout the province, serving as a symbol of the city's and Tuscany's identity. It is an appointment that blends the Florentines' love for running with the timeless charm of their historic center, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
The 86th Conad Notturna di San Giovanni returns on Saturday, June 20, 2026, in the historic center of Florence, as part of the official calendar of celebrations for the patron saint. The start is set for 9:00 PM in Piazza San Giovanni, in front of the Duomo. About 2,000 runners are expected, supported by 300 volunteers. The event is supported by Conad Nord Ovest (title sponsor) and Joma as the technical sponsor.
A city loop among the illuminated monuments: Piazza San Giovanni, Via Calzaiuoli, Piazza della Signoria, Via dei Gondi, Via dei Leoni, Via dei Castellani, Piazza dei Giudici, Piazza Mentana, Lungarno Diaz, Lungarno alle Grazie, Piazza dei Cavalleggeri, Corso dei Tintori, Via dei Benci, Via Verdi, Piazza Salvemini, Via Pietrapiana, Piazza Sant'Ambrogio, Borgo la Croce, Via della Mattonaia, Via Niccolini, and Piazza d'Azeglio, with a return to the finish line in front of the Duomo.
Among the men, Luis Intunzinzinzi (Burundi), Ayoub Bouras (Morocco), and Vincenzo Grieco are expected. Among the women, Adeline Musanbeyeyezu (Rwanda), Mercy Jebichii (Kenya, 2025 winner), and Tiziana Gianotti are confirmed.
The start and finish lines are in Piazza San Giovanni, in the heart of Florence's historic center, just a short walk from the Santa Maria Novella train station (10 minutes on foot), which is easily accessible by train from all over Italy. For those arriving by car, we recommend using the park-and-ride facilities served by the tramway, given the traffic restrictions in the center during the race.
Registration is exclusively online via the Endu platform, with a fee of 20 euros for all categories. For the non-competitive runs, on-site registration is also available on the day of the event starting at 7:00 PM. All finishers receive a commemorative medal.
The race takes place during the Saint John celebrations (June 20-24): a perfect opportunity to also witness the historical pageant and the "Fochi," the famous fireworks over the Arno. We recommend booking your accommodation well in advance.
