Commemoration of the Quadraro Roundup

A date the Quadraro never forgets

April 17, 1944, is the most somber date in the history of Quadraro, a working-class district in the southeast of Rome, now split between the V and VII Municipalities. At dawn that day, German troops surrounded the neighborhood streets and launched, house by house, the operation codenamed Whale (Unternehmen Walfisch), organized personally by Major Herbert Kappler with the support of the Gestapo, the SS, and the Koch gang. Approximately two thousand men were detained and gathered in the local cinema; from there, via the Fossoli transit camp, several hundred were deported to Germany and Poland for forced labor. Many never returned.

The roundup was the Nazi response to a neighborhood considered ungovernable: a den of partisans, draft dodgers, scattered soldiers, and saboteurs, the Quadraro had been contemptuously dubbed by the occupiers as the "Wasp's Nest". That nickname, originally an insult, has become a title of pride for the residents over time and now names the local ANPI section.

The annual commemoration

For decades, every April 17, the Quadraro celebrates its collective memory with a day of public initiatives. The institutional moment takes place in the morning with the laying of laurel wreaths at the monuments dedicated to the deportees: the Parco 17 aprile 1944, in the VII Municipality, and the site on via dei Quintili, in the V Municipality. The ceremonies are attended by the Mayor of Rome, city councilors, the presidents of the involved Municipalities, and the Roman leadership of the ANPI.

In the afternoon, the memory takes to the streets: from Piazza dei Consoli, the civic heart of the district, the procession promoted by the Municipality, the ANPI, and local associations begins. It is a unique procession where the role of the youth is central: local schools — including the Liceo Teresa Gullace Talotta and the Istituto Rita Levi Montalcini — participate with readings, banners, and projects prepared throughout the school year.

Meetings, historical research, and testimonies

Alongside official ceremonies, the neighborhood builds a program of cultural enrichment every year. The social spaces and cultural centers of Quadraro host book presentations, screenings, conferences, and archival research carried out in collaboration with the Historical Archive of Rome, dedicated to the Roman Resistance, the battle of Cecafumo in September 1943, and the reconstruction of the biographies of the deportees. There is no shortage of graphic novels, theatrical performances, and oral history projects born from the testimonies of survivors and their families: since 2010, the theatrical production Nido di Vespe has brought those very voices to the stage.

A Gold Medal district

In 2004, sixty years after the events, the Quadraro territory was awarded the Gold Medal for Civil Merit for the behavior of its population during the occupation. The recognition gave new impetus to memory initiatives and consolidated the bond between the history of the roundup and the contemporary identity of the district, now also known for its murals and a vibrant neighborhood scene.

The commemoration of the Quadraro roundup is not an event for specialists: it is a popular, free, and open appointment that offers visitors to Rome a different face of the city, far from the tourist paths of the historic center.
