The grand parade of allegorical floats in Civitaquana
The Civitaquana Carnival is a staple event in the festive calendar of Civitaquana, a small town of just over a thousand residents in the province of Pescara, set in the rolling hills of Abruzzo. Established in the 1980s and growing with every edition, the Carnival is now one of the most popular events in the Vestina area, drawing crowds from both the local community and surrounding towns.
The heart of the festival is the grand parade of allegorical floats, a testament to the creativity and hard work of local groups who spend months building these spectacular, colorful structures. The floats travel through the village streets to Piazza 5 Dicembre 1943, accompanied by music, costumed groups, and choreography that brings the entire afternoon to life. The costumes, often featuring sharp, topical satire, are a highlight of the event.
Beyond the parade, the program includes children's entertainment, street performances, music, and food stalls serving local specialties. The day is designed for families of all ages, transforming the small village into a lively open-air stage.
The parade concludes with the traditional awards ceremony, honoring the best costume and the best allegorical floats, judged on originality, effort, and carnival spirit. It is the perfect moment to celebrate the groups' hard work and bring the day to a festive close.
Organized by the Pro Loco of Civitaquana with the support of the Municipality, the Civitaquana Carnival is a cornerstone of local identity and culture, bridging generations and strengthening the sense of community in this authentic corner of inland Abruzzo.
The 37th edition of the Civitaquana Carnival was held on Sunday, February 15, 2026, in Civitaquana (PE). The meeting point was set at 1:00 PM in Piazza 5 Dicembre 1943, with the allegorical float parade starting at 2:00 PM.
As per tradition, the allegorical floats created by local groups paraded through the town center accompanied by music, costumes, and entertainment for children, while food stalls offered local specialties. The day concluded with the awards ceremony for the best costume and the best floats, judged on their originality and carnival spirit.
