About Civetta Carnival

The Civetta Carnival is a grand masked celebration that brings color to the streets of downtown Galatina, in the heart of Salento, every February. This cheerful, grassroots parade is designed primarily for children and families, starting at Piazza della Stazione and winding through the city streets with costumed groups, live music, and entertainment. Organized by the L'Agorà Association with the support of local schools, groups, and organizations, it is one of the most cherished carnival traditions in the province of Lecce.

The Civetta Carnival in Galatina

Every February, in the heart of Salento, Galatina transforms into a vast open-air stage for the Civetta Carnival. It is the city's most anticipated masked event, a colorful and lively parade that blends folk tradition, music, and a spirit of togetherness. The festival draws families and curious visitors from across the region, who fill the downtown streets to cheer on the costumed groups and get swept up in the parade's infectious energy.

A celebration for children and families

The Civetta Carnival has a deeply popular and inclusive soul: it is conceived first and foremost as a celebration for children and families. Confetti, masks, music, and entertainment fill an afternoon of pure fun, where the community gathers to share a moment of joy and lightheartedness. Rather than a spectacular parade of massive floats, this is a participatory neighborhood event where the town itself is the star.

The parade through the city center

The parade kicks off at Piazza della Stazione and winds its way along the main streets of downtown Galatina, including Via Liguria, Via Gallipoli, and Corso Porta Luce, before concluding in the city squares. Music trucks lead and follow the procession, setting the rhythm for the festivities, while costumed groups enliven the route with dances and choreography.

Who organizes the Carnival

The event is promoted by the L'Agorà Association, with the patronage of the Municipality of Galatina and the collaboration of numerous local entities, including schools, social cooperatives, and city associations such as Legambiente, Fidas, and Virtus. This blend of volunteer work and institutional support makes the Civetta Carnival a true community event, built from the ground up and deeply rooted in Galatina's social life.

Galatina, a city of art in Salento

Hosting the Carnival in the center of Galatina means exploring one of the most fascinating villages in Salento, Puglia, famous for the Basilica of Santa Caterina d'Alessandria with its extraordinary frescoes and its historical ties to the tarantism tradition. Experiencing the Civetta Carnival is thus also an opportunity to discover this corner of Salento in its most festive and authentic form.

On Sunday, February 8, 2026, the Civetta Carnival returned to color the streets of Galatina. As per tradition, the meeting point was set at Piazza della Stazione at 3:00 PM, the starting point for the masked procession that wound through the city center.

The 2026 edition was part of the rich calendar of carnival celebrations in Salento, alongside those in neighboring towns like Aradeo, Gallipoli, Nardò, and Porto Cesareo.
