The vertical race from Pallanzeno to Alpe Bisciumo Superiore
The Cipir "Ul Dricc" Pallanzeno-Bisciumo is a vertical race established in 2026 in Pallanzeno, a small town in the province of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola, Piedmont. Designed as a response to the growing passion for pure uphill races, it is a competition that focuses on the essentials: few kilometers, massive elevation gain, and a breathtaking gradient. The name "Ul Dricc" draws from the local Ossola dialect and the direct, "straight" character of the trail that climbs uncompromisingly toward the mountains.
The race covers just 2.6 kilometers but features 950 meters of positive elevation gain, with an average gradient of 36.5% and peaks touching 50%. The start is in the center of Pallanzeno, with an initial asphalt stretch that quickly gives way to the trail: the route enters the heart of the mountain, winding through woods and ancient mule tracks until reaching the finish line at Alpe Bisciumo Superiore, one of the steepest and most scenic slopes in the area. About 970 meters from the start, there is a sprint finish line called "Ul Salt D'ul Porc," which rewards those who tackle the first 200 meters of elevation gain with the most momentum.
The event is organized by the Pro Loco of Pallanzeno with the patronage of the Municipality and is part of the circuit of vertical races in the Verbano-Cusio-Ossola territory. The first edition, held in May 2026, brought together athletes from all over the VCO, Piedmont, and nearby Switzerland, with the participation of numerous local sports clubs. More than just a competition, "Ul Dricc" has become a true celebration of mountain sports, enlivened by volunteers, families, associations, and local sponsors.
The race is the centerpiece of a day of festivities: a pasta party, local sausage sandwiches, music with a DJ set, and award ceremonies in the late afternoon. It is an opportunity to experience Pallanzeno and the Ossola Valley through sport, tradition, and conviviality, all set against the backdrop of the stunning mountains.
The first edition of the Cipir "Ul Dricc" Pallanzeno-Bisciumo took place on Saturday, May 16, 2026, exceeding all expectations: 166 registered participants at the start, coming from all over the VCO, Piedmont, and nearby Switzerland, with numerous local sports clubs.
