The artisanal chocolate festival in the historic center of Castel San Giovanni
Cioccolandia is the event that every autumn transforms the historic center of Castel San Giovanni, a municipality in the province of Piacenza in Emilia-Romagna, into a grand festival dedicated to chocolate. Born in the early 2000s, the event has become one of the most beloved food and wine events in the Val Tidone, capable of attracting thousands of visitors from all over the Piacenza area and neighboring provinces.
For the entire weekend, stalls fill Piazza XX Settembre, Corso Matteotti, the town's streets, and Piazza Cardinal Agostino Casaroli, in front of the Collegiata. Visitors stroll among exhibitors, admiring pralines, chocolate bars, truffles, strawberries and candied fruit, bonbons, and artistic creations of all kinds. Master chocolatiers work live in front of the public, shaping elaborate sculptures and fountains of melted chocolate.
Alongside chocolate, local specialties take center stage: wines from the hills of Val Tidone and the traditional Batarรฒ, the typical Piacenza focaccia cooked over embers. The festival thus combines the sweetness of artisanal chocolate with the authentic taste of local cuisine, in a journey designed for the whole family.
Cioccolandia has a strong family focus: the Cioccobimbi workshop engages children who, with aprons and chef hats, can decorate and prepare their own treats under the guidance of volunteers. There are also games, entertainment, and shows that liven up the squares throughout the two days.
The event is organized by the Pro Loco of Castel San Giovanni with the patronage of the Municipality and relies on the work of numerous volunteers. The delicious specialties are distributed in exchange for a small donation, often for charity, confirming the spirit of solidarity and community that has always characterized the event.
The new edition of Cioccolandia is scheduled in Castel San Giovanni (Piacenza) on Saturday, November 7, and Sunday, November 8, 2026. The main areas of the festival will be Piazza XX Settembre, Corso Matteotti, the town's streets, and Piazza Cardinal Casaroli, where you can admire pralines, chocolate bars, and artistic creations by master chocolatiers at work, as well as the unmissable fountains of melted chocolate.
As tradition dictates, there will also be space for Val Tidone specialties, wines from the hills, and the Cioccobimbi workshops dedicated to children. The detailed program, with schedules and special events, will be published by the Pro Loco of Castel San Giovanni in the weeks leading up to the event.
Castel San Giovanni is located along the Via Emilia, in the western part of the province of Piacenza. By car, it can be reached from the A21 Piacenza-Turin motorway (Castel San Giovanni exit) or from the A1. By train, Castel San Giovanni station is served by the Piacenza-Voghera-Alessandria line.
Access to the event and the town center streets is free. For tasting the sweets, a bracelet is generally required, obtainable at the information points in exchange for a small donation for charity.
It is advisable to arrive in the early afternoon to witness the highlights of the festival in the town squares. Parking in the center is limited during the event: it is better to use the parking areas on the outskirts and walk to the heart of the festival.
