Open-air cinema under the stars in the Public Gardens of Trieste
When summer arrives, Trieste lights up the outdoor screen: Cinema Nordest is the festival that kicks off the summer film season in the greenery of the Muzio de Tommasini Public Gardens, the historic 19th-century garden in the heart of the city. Among monumental trees and busts of illustrious figures, the garden transforms into an open-air cinema.
The festival takes place in the early days of June and marks the opening of the film programme for Trieste Estate, the major event that fills the city with concerts, theatre, dance, and cinema throughout the summer. Cinema Nordest is curated as part of the municipal programme and, like the other summer screenings in the gardens, is designed to offer accessible, quality evenings to a wide audience.
The de Tommasini Public Gardens have always been one of the most beloved places by the people of Trieste: attending a screening here, outdoors and surrounded by greenery in the city centre, offers an experience that goes beyond just watching a film. It's the perfect way to inaugurate Trieste's cultural summer in a relaxed and evocative setting.
Trieste boasts a solid film tradition, with festivals and historic cinemas animating the city all year round. The summer open-air season, which Cinema Nordest opens, continues for weeks, bringing the big screen to the city gardens, confirming the deep bond between the city and the seventh art.
In June 2026, Cinema Nordest returns to light up the screen in the de Tommasini Public Gardens, opening the Trieste Estate programme (June 4 – August 31). Open-air screenings immersed in the greenery of the city centre, awaiting the long season of cinema under the stars.
