About Cima Lancia Commemoration

Every year at the start of summer, the community of Carisolo climbs to the cross overlooking Cima Lancia for the Commemoration of the fallen of all wars. Established in 1945 as a gesture of gratitude for the end of the conflict, the tradition combines a mountain gathering, Holy Mass at Malga Geridolo, and an alpine lunch featuring polenta and local Val Rendena specialties. A moment of prayer, remembrance, and community in the Trentino mountains, organized by the Pro Loco of Carisolo.

A mountain tradition rooted in 1945

The Cima Lancia Commemoration is one of the most heartfelt summer events in Carisolo, a small town in the Val Rendena in the province of Trento, in the heart of the Trentino-Alto Adige region. Every year, the community gathers to honor the fallen of all wars at the large cross that stands atop the Cima Lancia saddle, the mountain that closes the upper valley to the north and whose peak is visible from much of the Rendena area.

The tradition began in May 1945, when a group of young people from Carisolo climbed to the summit to thank the Lord for the end of the Second World War. Since then, the commemoration has been held without interruption, becoming a symbol of shared memory for the entire valley.

The Cima Lancia cross

The original structure, modest in size, withstood the harsh mountain weather for nearly fifty years. In 1995, it was replaced by the current cross, standing about ten meters tall, which was transported and hoisted to the summit thanks to the efforts of local Alpine troops and volunteer associations. With its bare arms framed by the mountain pass, the cross is now a landmark visible from the village and a place of reflection for the entire community.

The day's program

The commemoration spans the entire day, alternating between nature, spirituality, and conviviality:

  • Morning hike: The day begins with a climb toward the summit, often accompanied by nature-focused activities such as discovering wild herbs.
  • Gathering at the cross: By mid-morning, participants meet at the Cima Lancia cross, the highest and most symbolic point of the event.
  • Holy Mass: The religious service in memory of the fallen is traditionally held at Malga Geridolo.
  • Alpine lunch: Following the service, a community lunch is served, featuring polenta, sausages, and typical Val Rendena products.

A moment of community

The climb to Cima Lancia is more than just a commemorative act: it is an opportunity for generations to meet, pray, and hope for peace. The event is organized by the Pro Loco of Carisolo in collaboration with the Val Rendena Tourist Board, and in the past, it has featured evocative evening lighting of the cross, visible from the entire village. It is an event that tells the story of the deep bond between the people of Rendena and their mountains better than any words.
