The annual gathering at the summit cross in memory of the fallen of all wars
The Cima Lancia Commemoration is one of the most heartfelt summer events in Carisolo, a small town in the Val Rendena in the province of Trento, in the heart of the Trentino-Alto Adige region. Every year, the community gathers to honor the fallen of all wars at the large cross that stands atop the Cima Lancia saddle, the mountain that closes the upper valley to the north and whose peak is visible from much of the Rendena area.
The tradition began in May 1945, when a group of young people from Carisolo climbed to the summit to thank the Lord for the end of the Second World War. Since then, the commemoration has been held without interruption, becoming a symbol of shared memory for the entire valley.
The original structure, modest in size, withstood the harsh mountain weather for nearly fifty years. In 1995, it was replaced by the current cross, standing about ten meters tall, which was transported and hoisted to the summit thanks to the efforts of local Alpine troops and volunteer associations. With its bare arms framed by the mountain pass, the cross is now a landmark visible from the village and a place of reflection for the entire community.
The commemoration spans the entire day, alternating between nature, spirituality, and conviviality:
The climb to Cima Lancia is more than just a commemorative act: it is an opportunity for generations to meet, pray, and hope for peace. The event is organized by the Pro Loco of Carisolo in collaboration with the Val Rendena Tourist Board, and in the past, it has featured evocative evening lighting of the cross, visible from the entire village. It is an event that tells the story of the deep bond between the people of Rendena and their mountains better than any words.
The 2026 edition of the Cima Lancia Commemoration, the 79th, was held on Sunday, July 5, 2026, in Carisolo. The day began at 8:00 AM in Piazza 2 Maggio with a hike to discover wild herbs in the company of Dr. Francesca Pagani, with a climb toward the Campolo area. At 10:00 AM, the gathering took place at the Cima Lancia cross, the central moment of the commemoration in memory of the fallen of all wars. At 12:30 PM, the traditional alpine lunch was held at Malga Geridolo, featuring polenta, sausages, and local products, reserved for a maximum of 200 people with free registration at the Pro Loco of Carisolo.
Carisolo is located in the upper Val Rendena, in the province of Trento. By car, it can be reached via the SS239 road towards Madonna di Campiglio; it is about a 1 hour and 30 minute drive from Trento. The nearest train station is in Trento, which is connected to the valley by regional bus services.
The gathering at the cross involves a mountain hike on a path not suitable for those with mobility issues: hiking boots and appropriate clothing are required. Water and sun protection are recommended.
The alpine lunch at Malga Geridolo has limited seating and requires mandatory registration at the Pro Loco of Carisolo office until all spots are filled.
