Two evenings of traditional Cilento peasant cuisine in the square of Sant'Antuono di Torchiara
The Cilento Together Under the Stars Festival is one of those local gatherings that captures the true essence of summer in the hinterland of the Province of Salerno better than any guidebook. It takes place in Piazza A. Torre, in the Sant'Antuono district of Torchiara, a small village of just over 1,800 inhabitants overlooking the hills that divide the sea of Agropoli from the inland valleys of the Cilento, in Campania. No massive stages or grand productions here: the festival is the square itself, with tables set outdoors, committee stands frying non-stop, and local families gathering in the cool evening air.
The event is organized by the Comitato Festa S. Barbara V.M., the association that manages the celebrations in honor of Saint Barbara, who is venerated in the Copersito and Sant'Antuono area. The festival was born as a convivial offshoot of that devotional calendar: a way to fund the patronal feast while keeping alive a culinary tradition that risks surviving only within private homes.
The event's main strength is the organizers' declared commitment to building the menu exclusively around historic local dishes, avoiding the generic street food that now dominates many festivals. The tasting journey over the two evenings includes:
It is a deliberately short, popular menu, designed to be enjoyed standing up or on a shared bench, and which holds almost identity-defining value in the Cilento: these are the dishes of the original Mediterranean diet, prepared with few ingredients and a lot of patience.
Torchiara enjoys a calendar of festivals that spans the entire year. It begins in January with the Feast of Saint Anthony, its focara (bonfire), and the sound of bagpipes; it continues in summer with the patronal celebrations dedicated to Saint Barbara and the Most Holy Savior, alongside the medieval festival and the fig and prosciutto festival. The Cilento Together Under the Stars Festival fits into this fabric: it is not an isolated event but a piece of the village's festive cycle, with the same audience of neighbors, emigrants returning for the holidays, and tourists coming down from the coast.
Visitors from outside should expect a village-scale event: narrow streets, limited parking, and stand service that picks up once the sun goes down. The evenings start early, with families and children, and stretch late into the night with chatter, toasts, and background music. The festival's name is not just poetic: in Sant'Antuono, far from the lights of the coast, the summer sky is truly visible, and it is as much a part of the experience as the fried pizzas.
In a Cilento increasingly oriented toward beach tourism, events like this restore the inland and agricultural dimension of the territory. For the visitor, it is an opportunity to taste, at popular prices and in an authentic setting, dishes that are hard to find in coastal restaurants, and to discover a villageโTorchiara, with its historic center and noble palacesโthat deserves a stroll before sitting down to eat.
The 2026 edition confirmed the formula of two consecutive evenings in the heart of the Sant'Antuono district, in the Municipality of Torchiara (Province of Salerno, Campania). The Comitato Festa S. Barbara V.M. set up the stands in Piazza A. Torre, opening on Thursday, July 9 from 8:00 PM and repeating on Friday, July 10 from 9:00 PM.
The guiding theme announced by the organizers was a gastronomic journey entirely dedicated to popular Cilento cuisine, without any contamination: starting with sfriuonzolo and Cilento-style fried pizzas, continuing with the two variants of zeppole โ the savory squash blossom one and the classic sweet one โ and finishing with fresh watermelon and traditional drinks, wine and percoche peaches in wine.
The local press presented the event as a moment of village conviviality rather than a festival: the declared goal was to bring residents and visitors together in a simple atmosphere and to enhance recipes that tell the gastronomic identity of the Cilento territory.
