Christmas in the historic heart of Palo del Colle, amidst medieval arches, music, and tradition

Christmas Under the Arches is the Christmas event that brings the historic center of Palo del Colle, a town in the Metropolitan City of Bari, Apulia, to life every year. For a weekend in December, the ancient heart of the town dresses up for the festivities: the cobbled streets, the squares, and above all, the evocative stone arches that define the village's medieval fabric become the natural backdrop for a series of widespread events, filled with lights, music, and the scents of the season.
The event unfolds as an itinerary crossing the most iconic spots of the historic center, including Piazza della Minerva, Piazza Santa Croce, and Via Umberto I. Visitors stroll from one square to another, discovering concerts, street performances, markets, or tastings along the way. One of the most distinctive features is the guided tours of the historic arches, which recount the history and architecture of these stone passages, often accompanied by photographic exhibitions.
The program weaves together different genres and styles: classical and opera concerts, gospel choirs, performances by local dance and music schools, and street artists including jugglers, fire-eaters, and stilt-walkers, alongside contemporary circus shows. Along the route, Christmas markets offer local handicrafts, gift ideas, and Apulian gastronomic specialties. There is also the traditional book market Sfoglia il Natale, hosted in the local churches.
A large space is dedicated to the little ones, with a children's area featuring inflatables, games, and activities, the Santa Claus Village, and moments dedicated to schools. Between nativity scenes set up in churches and municipal spaces, tastings of local products, and the warm welcome of the Pro Loco, the event aims to promote local associations, craftsmanship, and local artistic talent.
Strongly supported by the municipal administration and the Pro Loco of Palo del Colle, Christmas Under the Arches has become one of the most anticipated appointments in the town's Christmas calendar in just a few years. The format of widespread events throughout the historic center allows visitors to rediscover corners and monuments that go unnoticed the rest of the year, restoring to the community a sense of belonging to their ancient village during the most magical time of the year.
The dates for the 2026 edition of Christmas Under the Arches have not yet been made official. In previous years, the event has taken place over a weekend in December in the historic center of Palo del Colle. The detailed program, including concerts, markets, guided tours of the arches, and children's entertainment, is usually communicated by the Municipality and the Pro Loco in the weeks preceding the event.
