Christmas markets, crafts, and Santa's Village in the hamlet at the foot of Montevergine
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
Christmas in the Partenio Villages is an itinerant holiday festival that, in the green heart of Irpinia, connects three small towns in the province of Avellino: Summonte, Sant'Angelo a Scala, and Ospedaletto d'Alpinolo. Throughout December, the calendar moves from village to village, bringing the festive atmosphere to a different square at the foot of the Partenio massif each weekend.
The project was born from the collaboration between the three municipalities, the Partenio Regional Park Authority, the GAL Partenio, and the Partenio-Vallo di Lauro Mountain Community: a way to promote an inland area of Campania that, outside of the peak season, is better known for its forests and the Sanctuary of Montevergine than for its winter events.
The municipality of Ospedaletto d'Alpinolo concludes the journey with the event closest to Christmas, held on the final weekend before Christmas Eve. The town center fills with stalls and booths from late afternoon onwards, as the lights and bonfires are lit: this is when the village, situated at an altitude of just over 700 meters, truly shines.
The evenings follow a simple and proven format: markets open from 6 PM, children's entertainment, stalls featuring local producers, and food stands for outdoor dining. The Santa's Village, a recurring feature of the entire festival, is a must-visit for families.
With just over a thousand inhabitants, Ospedaletto d'Alpinolo is the town you pass through while climbing towards the Sanctuary of Montevergine, one of the most popular pilgrimage destinations in Campania. It is famous for the castagna del prete (priest's chestnut), a dried and smoked chestnut to which the town dedicates an autumn festival, as well as for its locally produced nougat and sweets. In winter, the mountain air is crisp, and the historic center, nestled between stone houses, does the rest: no stage design is needed; the village is a natural nativity scene in itself.
Compared to the large city markets, the scale here is intentionally intimate: you can walk through it in a few dozen minutes, prices are those of a village fair, and admission is free. For those arriving from Avellino or Naples, it is a perfect half-day trip, to be wrapped up with dinner at the stalls or in one of the local trattorias. The quality of the experience lies in the slow pace and the direct relationship with the producers, rather than the number of exhibitors.
The festival stages are concentrated between the first and fourth weekends of December, with Ospedaletto d'Alpinolo traditionally at the end of the calendar, around December 20th. The exact dates are published by the municipalities, the GAL Partenio, and the Park Authority in the preceding weeks: it is advisable to check them before traveling, as the program can vary from year to year and not all stages are repeated with the same formula.
At the moment, no official dates have been published for the 2026 stage of Christmas in the Partenio Villages in Ospedaletto d'Alpinolo. The festival is organized year by year by the municipalities of Summonte, Sant'Angelo a Scala, and Ospedaletto d'Alpinolo together with the GAL Partenio, the Partenio Regional Park Authority, and the Partenio-Vallo di Lauro Mountain Community, and the calendar is usually released close to the beginning of December.
Based on previous editions, the Ospedaletto d'Alpinolo stage takes place in December, in the evening, in the village center, with Christmas markets, crafts, typical Irpinian products, food stalls, bonfire entertainment, and a Santa's Village. However, none of these elements are confirmed for 2026.
To find out the dates and program, it is best to follow the channels of the Municipality of Ospedaletto d'Alpinolo and the GAL Partenio, or the local Irpinian press, which publishes the complete festival calendar in the preceding weeks.
By car: A16 Naples-Canosa motorway, exit at Avellino Ovest, then take the SS 374 towards Montevergine; Ospedaletto d'Alpinolo is about 10 km from Avellino and about 50 km from Naples. By train: Avellino station, then regional bus lines towards Mercogliano and Ospedaletto d'Alpinolo.
Access to the markets is free. You only pay for what you consume at the food stalls or purchase from the exhibitors.
