A month of free events including markets, lights, and a living nativity scene in the heart of the Ciociaria region
Christmas in the City is the major Christmas program of the Municipality of Frosinone, the capital of the province of the same name in the heart of the Ciociaria region, in Lazio. For over a month, from the beginning of December until Epiphany, the city transforms: not a single village concentrated in one square, but a network of events that touches Frosinone Alta, the Scalo, Parco Matusa, the Villa Comunale, and the Cavoni, Selva Piana, and Maniano districts. It is a deliberate choice by the municipal administration, which wanted a Christmas capable of reaching the entire urban fabric and not just the center.
The markets are the common thread of the entire event and are spread across multiple locations. In the Villa Comunale, along the axis of Via Aldo Moro, you will find the stalls of the Christmas Markets in the Villa, open until Epiphany; at Parco Matusa, the Markets at the Park are added, while the Antique and Craft Market occupies city spaces in the weeks leading up to Christmas, with a dedicated finale in the first days of January. The offerings range from handmade items to typical Ciociaria products, from festive sweets to local gift ideas.
At Parco Matusa, the ice skating rink has become the reference point for families throughout the holiday period. The same park hosts an electric train for the little ones, and from Boxing Day until January 6th, the space transforms into a Digital Village, with laser games, light shows, and interactive installations designed for children and teenagers.
The most iconic moment of the event is the Living Nativity curated by the Pro Loco of Frosinone with the support of the municipal administration, set up in Piazza dello Scalo. Costumed actors reconstruct the scenes of the Nativity and the trades of the past, in a representation that, as Mayor Riccardo Mastrangeli recalled, is not just a re-enactment but an opportunity to come together as a community. In the most recent edition, the nativity scene, initially scheduled for December 26th, was postponed to January 3rd due to bad weather, still confirming a very large turnout. Also at the Scalo, the Village of Light takes shape, with light scenography along the streets of the district.
Frosinone does not have the tourist fame of the major Lazio destinations, and for this very reason, its Christmas retains an authentic and popular character: it is a festival designed primarily for those who live there, open to those arriving from outside. The program is entirely free, making it an ideal destination for a family trip, perhaps combined with a visit to the villages of the Ciociaria — Alatri, Anagni, Veroli, Fumone — all reachable within half an hour by car. Those arriving from Rome or Naples will find a simple and well-organized winter weekend in the Ciociaria capital, with lights shining until Epiphany.
Presented at the beginning of December by the Municipality of Frosinone, the 2025-2026 Christmas in the City program involved Frosinone Alta, the Scalo, Parco Matusa, the Villa Comunale, and the Cavoni, Selva Piana, and Maniano districts, with entirely free initiatives designed for all age groups. Mayor Riccardo Mastrangeli emphasized the desire for an inclusive Christmas, extended to the entire urban fabric, created together with merchants, the Pro Loco, and city associations.
On December 6th, the inauguration of the ice skating rink at Parco Matusa effectively opened the festivities; from December 13th, the Markets at the Park began, alongside the Christmas Markets in the Villa in the Villa Comunale, along Via Aldo Moro. The inauguration of the markets in the Villa was accompanied by Christmas entertainment, music from the Romagnoli band, cheerleaders, and photos with Santa Claus. The Antique and Craft Market continued until December 21st, with an additional day on January 4, 2026; the markets in the Villa and at the Park remained open until January 6th.
On December 22nd and 23rd, the electric train animated Parco Matusa, which from December 26th to January 6th transformed into a Digital Village, with laser games and light installations. At the Scalo, the Village of Light illuminated the streets of the district. The Living Nativity of the Pro Loco, initially scheduled for December 26th, was postponed to January 3, 2026, at 5:30 PM in Piazza dello Scalo due to adverse weather conditions. The program was completed by concerts in churches, gospel events, silent discos, street artist performances, tastings, book presentations, guided tours, and the passage of the Olympic Flame.
