A month of markets, concerts, and videomapping on the Phlegraean Fields promontory
Every year, between early December and January 6th, the Municipality of Monte di Procida, in the province of Naples (Campania), dresses its town center for the holidays with the municipal Christmas festival, known in recent years by the brand "Natale in Vetrina". This is not a single market concentrated in one square, but a widespread calendar: lights, nativity scenes, shows, and stalls are distributed between Piazza XXVII Gennaio, Piazza Sant'Antonio, the parishes, the Laboratorio delle Arti, and the municipal sports facilities.
The setting makes the event unique. Monte di Procida is the western tip of the Phlegraean Fields, a natural balcony overlooking the island of Procida, Ischia, and the gulf: strolling among the stalls with the sea in the background on a December evening is an integral part of the experience.
The commercial heart of the festival is the Christmas markets, usually set up on the weekend before Christmas Eve. The stalls offer food and wine products from the Phlegraean area, traditional Neapolitan Christmas sweets, mulled wine, and roasted chestnuts, as well as handcrafted creations, decorations, and gift ideas made by hobbyists and small local shops. Alongside the stalls are food areas and refreshment points managed by local associations.
Great attention is given to families. The Santa's House with the "Post your letter" initiative allows little ones to deliver their wishes and get their photos taken; throughout the days, there are workshops, entertainment, cotton candy, inflatables, and small attractions. Sports initiatives and tournaments are often planned in municipal facilities to involve children and teenagers during the school holidays.
The artistic side is entrusted to local cultural entities. The typical program alternates:
For several editions, the most spectacular novelty has been the Christmas videomapping: light projections that transform facades and churchyards into visual narratives of lights and images, attracting audiences even from the neighboring towns of Bacoli and Pozzuoli.
Alongside secular events, the religious dimension remains vibrant. In the Parish of Santa Maria Assunta in Cielo, the 18th-century Neapolitan school nativity scene can be visited by the faithful and visitors during the hours indicated by the parish, while the churches of Sant'Antonio and San Giuseppe host concerts and moments of prayer throughout the Advent and holiday period.
What characterizes the festival is the strong participation of associations: parishes, pro loco, music and dance schools, merchant committees, and volunteer associations build a calendar together with the Municipality that lasts over a month. Admission to events in the squares and markets is generally free, with optional donations for some indoor initiatives. It is the ideal opportunity to discover, outside the beach season, a seaside village in Campania that experiences Christmas with the slow and warm rhythm of Southern towns.
The Municipality of Monte di Procida offered a widespread calendar from December 6, 2025, to January 6, 2026, with the highlight week between December 19 and 29. Piazza Sant'Antonio hosted the Christmas markets and the Santa's House with the "Post your letter" initiative, while Piazza XXVII Gennaio became the stage for evening events.
The musical program alternated the swing concert of the Corale Flegrea, the opera of the Arché Association, Christmas flamenco on the parvis of the Parish of Santa Maria Assunta, and the guitar quintet with music by Vivaldi and Boccherini. The videomapping illuminated first Piazza Sant'Antonio and then Piazza XXVII Gennaio. The 18th-century Neapolitan nativity scene in the parish church was open for visits throughout the period.
By car: from the Naples Tangenziale, exit at Pozzuoli or Arco Felice, then take the SP road to Bacoli and Monte di Procida (about 20 km from Naples). On event days, the center may be pedestrianized: it is advisable to park in peripheral areas and continue on foot.
By train and bus: Cumana line (EAV Railway) to Torregaveta, the terminus a few minutes from Monte di Procida, then EAV bus or taxi. Alternatively, EAV bus lines from Pozzuoli and Bacoli.
By plane: Naples-Capodichino airport, about 30 km away.
Access to markets, squares, and videomapping is free. Food and wine consumption at the stalls is paid. For some concerts in churches, a contribution or reservation may be requested: check the Municipality's channels.
