The Christmas program in Pratola Serra, from the Immaculate Conception to the Epiphany
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
In Pratola Serra, a small town in the Province of Avellino in Campania, Christmas is not just a single evening but a program lasting nearly a month. Under the name Christmas Enchantment—also known in previous years as From Christmas to the Befana and Beautiful and Good Christmas—the Municipality of Pratola Serra and the Pro Loco organize dozens of events ranging from the Immaculate Conception to the Epiphany, involving the main town and the hamlets of Serra di Pratola and San Michele di Pratola.
It is a village festival in the truest sense of the word: there is no single stage or entrance fee, but rather a network of squares, churches, bars, and community centers that light up in turn. Visitors from outside will find an authentic winter Irpinia, filled with street bonfires, choirs, bingo games, and rustic flavors.
The most iconic moment is the Great Bonfire of the Immaculate Conception, which on December 8th concludes the opening day following the illumination of Corso Vittorio Emanuele. The ritual is repeated on December 13th with «St. Lucia and the Night of Bonfires» and returns in the days following Christmas with evenings such as «Music and Bonfires» and the «Castle Bonfire».
The December bonfires belong to a tradition widespread throughout the Campanian Apennine area: the fire lit in the square marks the transition toward the solstice and, above all, serves as a pretext for gathering. Wine, sweets, and local products are distributed around the flames, and the evening continues with live music.
Documented editions follow a fairly stable pattern. Recurring events include:
The spaces used are those of the town's daily life: the Giovanni Paolo II Auditorium, the Don Teobaldo Acone Sports Hall, Piazza Mercadante in San Michele, and Piazza Tiglio in Serra di Pratola.
Among the most anticipated evenings is the one dedicated to potatoes cooked in the embers, held in Serra di Pratola. In the winter of 2025, the event returned on Sunday, December 21st, in Piazza Tiglio, with live music and food stands open to the entire community: proof that the Christmas program in Pratola Serra continues year after year, even as titles and program details change.
The event is managed by the Municipal Administration and the Pro Loco of Pratola Serra, supported by parishes, local associations, and merchants who host bingo games and musical evenings. Many initiatives have a charitable purpose—from AIL Christmas Stars to charity bingo—and involve schools with literary competitions and creative workshops.
The best time for a visit coincides with the two poles of the program: December 8th for the lighting of the lights and the bonfire, and January 6th for the Befana. Those looking for the most convivial atmosphere can aim for the gastronomic evenings in mid-December. Winter temperatures in Irpinia are cold: it is advisable to dress warmly, as almost everything takes place outdoors.
Pratola Serra is located about fifteen kilometers from Avellino, in a hilly area known for the wines of the Sabato Valley; a Christmas stop here can easily be combined with a visit to local wineries and nearby villages.
For the winter of 2026-2027, the Municipality of Pratola Serra and the Pro Loco have not yet published the Christmas Enchantment calendar. Based on documented editions, the program is expected to open on December 8th with the lighting of the Christmas lights along Corso Vittorio Emanuele and the Great Bonfire of the Immaculate Conception, closing on January 6th with the arrival of the Befana.
In between, there are typically the St. Lucia bonfire night, gastronomic evenings in Serra di Pratola, traveling bingo games in local venues, concerts by local choirs, and workshops for children. However, none of these events are confirmed for 2026: dates and titles change every year.
We will update this page as soon as the Municipality, the Pro Loco, or the Sistema Irpinia portal of the Province of Avellino release the official program.
