The artisanal Christmas chocolate market just steps from the Vatican

The Chocolate Festival at Piazza Risorgimento is the most delicious Christmas event in the Roman district of Prati. For three days, the square, which opens up right in front of the Vatican walls and just minutes from St. Peter's Square, hosts a row of wooden chalets illuminated by warm lights: inside, you will find pralines, bars, cremini, nougats, and chocolate sculptures crafted by master chocolatiers from various regions of Italy.
The initiative is part of the Municipality I Rome Center Christmas market program, promoted by the Municipality of Rome in the Lazio region: a circuit of events that, with the same layout and visual identity, enlivens some of the most popular squares in the historic center during December, from Piazza Mazzini to Largo De Matha in Trastevere, and the Testaccio Market.
The common thread is artisanal chocolate, presented in its many regional variations. Alongside the confectionery displays, there is also space for typical products and Christmas gift ideas, making your visit a perfect opportunity to finish your holiday shopping.
Piazza Risorgimento is one of the most vibrant hubs in Prati: a terminus for trams and buses, and a mandatory passage for those heading to the Vatican Museums, it is frequented all year round by Romans and visitors alike. In December, the cold air mixes with the scent of melted chocolate, and the square becomes a natural stop between a walk along Via Cola di Rienzo and a visit to St. Peter's Basilica.
The event is designed for all ages: families will find a short and easy path to navigate with children, while enthusiasts can engage directly with the artisans, who are happy to talk about their techniques, the origin of the cocoa beans, and the differences between various cocoa percentages.
In recent years, Municipality I has expanded its Christmas offerings, growing from a single market to a network of events distributed across different areas of the center, with the goal of promoting craftsmanship and small producers rather than industrial goods. The Chocolate Festival is the thematic highlight of this circuit and, due to its location, one of the most visited by foreign tourists.
The event usually takes place during the first long weekend of December, close to the Immaculate Conception, when Rome officially enters the holiday spirit. The stalls remain open from morning until late evening: the most evocative time is late afternoon, when the lights of the chalets turn on and the square fills up.
At the moment, Municipality I Rome Center has not yet released the calendar of Christmas markets for 2026 and, consequently, the dates of the Chocolate Festival at Piazza Risorgimento are not confirmed. In previous years, the event was held during the first long weekend of December, coinciding with the start of the festivities in Rome's historic center.
The format, if confirmed, should remain the established one: wooden chalets with master chocolatiers from various Italian regions, tastings, pralines and artisanal bars, typical products, and handmade Christmas decorations, with free admission to the square.
Metro A, stop Ottaviano - San Pietro (about 400 meters on foot). Numerous bus lines and tram 19 stop directly at Piazza Risorgimento. From Termini station, you can arrive in about 25 minutes using Metro A. Driving is not recommended: the area has heavy traffic and parking is scarce.
Free admission to the square; you only pay for what you buy or taste at the stalls.
Visit in the late afternoon for the best atmosphere. The square is a few minutes' walk from St. Peter's Square and the Vatican Museums: you can easily combine the market with a visit to the Vatican or a shopping trip on Via Cola di Rienzo.
