A Christmas market in the heart of Trastevere

Every December, Largo San Giovanni De Matha, a small square nestled in the alleys of Trastevere, transforms into a festive corner thanks to the Christmas Market promoted by the Municipality of Rome I Centre. Traditional wooden chalets, illuminated by warm lights, line up just a few steps from Piazza Trilussa and Ponte Sisto, offering Romans and tourists an intimate and authentic stop away from the bustle of the historic centre's major events.

Only artisanal products

The Municipality's choice is clear: only artisanal products are allowed on the stalls. Visitors can stroll among the chalets to discover nativity scenes and figurines, handmade Christmas decorations, gift items, small creative objects, and traditional sweets. It is the perfect opportunity to find an original gift while supporting local artisans and creatives, in a well-curated setting that has brought together about fifteen exhibitors in recent editions.

The charm of the district

The appeal of this market lies entirely in its setting: Trastevere, with its network of cobbled streets, ochre facades, and historic shops, is perhaps Rome's most beloved district. Strolling among the chalets with a hot chocolate in hand, breathing in the scent of sweets and admiring the lights, restores that intimate festive atmosphere that neighbourhood markets preserve better than any other. In some editions, the market has been enlivened by street performers in the late afternoon, accompanying Christmas shopping with music and entertainment.

The Largo De Matha event is part of a broader project through which the Municipality of Rome I Centre has spread Christmas markets across various points in the centre, from Piazza Mazzini to the Testaccio Market, all sharing the same aesthetic of wooden chalets and warm lights. The stated goal is to enhance the districts, support quality craftsmanship, and provide residents with spaces for socialising and celebration during the Advent period.
