Ten days of faith, brass bands, and community spirit in honor of the Holy Cross and Saint Michael the Archangel

Chiusano San Domenico Festival is the major annual celebration in Chiusano di San Domenico, a small town in the province of Avellino, Campania, perched at an altitude of approximately 680 meters on the western slopes of Monte Tuoro, between the Sabato and Calore valleys. The festivities take place between late April and early May and are dedicated to the Holy Cross and the patron saint Michael the Archangel, traditionally celebrated on May 8th.
In the Irpinian calendar, this is one of the longest patronal feasts: ten days during which the town fills with illuminations, music, and people, with a program that alternates liturgical moments with secular events. It is not an event designed for mass tourism, but a community celebration that draws back emigrants and those living outside the town, making the atmosphere particularly authentic.
The heart of the secular program is entrusted to grand brass band concerts, a tradition that has remained unchanged in Irpinia and Southern Italy for over a century. The bands arrive in the morning, parade through the streets of the historic center, and then perform in Piazza Dante Alighieri: a morning matinรฉe, an afternoon parade, and an evening dedicated to the actual concert on the bandstand, featuring symphonic pieces and opera excerpts conducted by guest maestros.
The 2025 edition featured the Gran Concerto Bandistico Cittร di San Potito Ultra and the renowned Gran Concerto Bandistico Cittร di Mercato San Severino, the latter conducted by maestro Vincenzo Caputo. It is a repertoire worth hearing live: Southern Italian bands perform highly complex operatic transcriptions, often before an audience that knows them note by note.
Alongside the band, the Festival Committee builds a lighter and more popular program each year, designed for all ages:
Devotion remains the common thread. Celebrations include the triduum, solemn masses, and the procession with the statues, which winds through the town amidst lines of the faithful. The cult of Saint Michael the Archangel is deeply rooted in Irpinia, where the warrior saint is linked to caves, mountain passes, and trails: in Chiusano, it intertwines with the devotion to the Holy Cross, giving the festival a dual identity that also explains its unusual duration.
During the festival, the Committee sets up food stalls where you can taste local specialties. The Chiusano area is a land of chestnuts, olive oil, cereals, and wine, and more generally, the Terminio-Cervialto area is known for its Podolica cow cheeses, starting with the famous caciocavallo podolico. Also worth trying are the dishes of Irpinian peasant cuisine, from homemade pasta to grilled meats.
Those arriving for the festival can take the opportunity for a walk in the village, which preserves the parish church of Santa Maria degli Angeli, the church of San Domenico, the church of San Giuseppe, and the church of the Congregazione del Rosario, as well as the remains of the medieval castle. The town is also a starting point for excursions towards Monte Tuoro and the springs that dot the territory. Avellino is just a dozen kilometers away.
For the 2026 edition of the Chiusano San Domenico Festival, no official dates or published program have been found. The reference remains the devotional calendar of the Irpinian village, which celebrates its patron saint, Saint Michael the Archangel, on May 8th along with the Holy Cross, with festivities that in recent editions have extended over about ten days between late April and early May.
Those wishing to participate can follow the channels of the Comitato Festa San Michele Arcangelo and the Municipality of Chiusano di San Domenico (province of Avellino, Campania), which publish the poster with the religious and secular program every year: grand brass band parades, musical evenings in Piazza Dante Alighieri, children's entertainment, food stalls, and an outdoor final concert.
This page will be updated as soon as the official 2026 dates and program are made public.
Chiusano di San Domenico is located about 12 km from Avellino. By car: A16 Naples-Canosa motorway, exit Avellino Est, then take the SS 7 Appia and provincial roads towards Terminio-Cervialto. The reference railway station is Avellino; the final connection is via local bus lines or by car.
Secular events are concentrated in Piazza Dante Alighieri and along the streets of the historic center, with the final concert stage set up outdoors (in 2025 at Piazzale Via Codrazzo). Religious celebrations are held in the town's churches.
As per the tradition of Irpinian patronal feasts, parades, brass band concerts, and evenings in the square are free to attend.
The town is at an altitude of 680 meters: it can be cool on late April and early May evenings, so it is best to bring a jacket. Parking in the center is limited on busy evenings: it is advisable to leave the car along the access roads and walk up.
