Classical music for the summer in the cloister of Santa Maria di Gesù in Catania
Chiostri e Cortili is the summer classical music festival organized by the Camerata Polifonica Siciliana in the city of Catania, Sicily. Launched in 2023, the event is permanently hosted in the extraordinary cloister of Santa Maria di Gesù, located in Piazza Santa Maria di Gesù—an 18th-century space that becomes a refined open-air stage during summer evenings. The artistic direction is led by Maestro Giovanni Ferrauto, while the presidency is held by musicologist Aldo Mattina.
Every year, the festival offers a concert cycle that alternates between great symphonic and chamber repertoire, tributes to beloved composers, and cross-genre performances involving theater, dance, and 20th-century music. The stars of the show are the Orchestra della Camerata Strumentale Siciliana and numerous international soloists and conductors, joined on select evenings by ensembles from the Vincenzo Bellini Conservatory of Catania.
The Santa Maria di Gesù complex, with origins dating back to the 15th century, is located in the neighborhood of the same name in Catania. The cloister, with its porticoes and intimate atmosphere, offers evocative acoustics and a historical context that enhances every performance. The choice of such a symbolic venue confirms the Camerata Polifonica Siciliana's commitment to bringing great music to the city's most iconic heritage sites.
Concerts typically take place on Friday evenings. Admission is a single, affordable ticket, with a reduced rate dedicated to students and faculty of the Vincenzo Bellini Conservatory. It is a wonderful opportunity to experience classical music in the summer within one of the most fascinating spots in Catania's historic center.
