A day in Catania dedicated to Vincenzo Bellini on his birthday
The Bellini Marathon is the highlight of the Bellini Festival, the major event that the Fondazione Festival Belliniano dedicates to Vincenzo Bellini, the composer born in Catania on November 3, 1801. Every year on this date, the city celebrates its most illustrious musician with a marathon of events that spans from morning to evening across the iconic landmarks of the historic center of Catania, in Sicily.
From 10:00 AM until late in the evening, the Bellini Marathon offers an uninterrupted journey of talks, exhibitions, film screenings, and concerts dedicated to Bellini's life and music. Conversations with scholars and critics explore the relationship between the composer and the arts, from opera to cinema, while screenings and exhibitions recount the legacy of his immortal works, from Norma to La sonnambula, and from I Puritani to I Capuleti e i Montecchi.
The marathon takes place in some of the most evocative locations in the city:
The most anticipated moment is the Extraordinary Concert for the anniversary of Vincenzo Bellini's birth, held in the evening around 8:00 PM at the Cathedral of Sant'Agata, with free admission. Before the composer's tomb, the most beloved pieces of the Bellinian repertoire resonate in a setting that combines civic devotion with high artistic quality.
The Bellini Marathon concludes the Bellini Festival, founded in 2009 by director and set designer Enrico Castiglione, the event's artistic director. The festival takes place every year between Catania and Taormina with symphonic-vocal galas, concerts, and opera productions, establishing itself as one of the main events dedicated to Bellini's opera in Sicily. The day of November 3rd represents the city's collective tribute to its most famous son.
The Bellini Marathon 2026 will be held in Catania on November 3, 2026, from 10:00 AM to 10:30 PM, as the grand finale of the 18th edition of the Bellini Festival. The date coincides with the birthday of Vincenzo Bellini and, in 2026, with the 225th anniversary of the Catanese composer's birth.
The day will take place between the Badia di Sant'Agata, Palazzo Biscari, and the Cathedral of Sant'Agata, featuring talks, exhibitions, screenings, and concerts dedicated to Bellinian music. In the evening, around 8:00 PM, the Extraordinary Concert at the Catania Cathedral, with free admission, will be held before the composer's tomb.
The detailed artistic program for the 2026 edition (performers, pieces, and event times) will be announced by the Fondazione Festival Belliniano closer to the event.
The Bellini Marathon takes place in the historic center of Catania (Province of Catania, Sicily). By train: Catania Centrale station, a few minutes from the Cathedral. By plane: Catania-Fontanarossa Airport, connected to the center by bus and taxi. By car: A18/A19 motorway, exit Catania Centro; the historic center is largely a restricted traffic zone (ZTL), so it is advisable to use peripheral parking lots.
Many marathon events have free admission; the evening Extraordinary Concert at the Cathedral is free until capacity is reached. For other Bellini Festival events, booking through the Fondazione Festival Belliniano is recommended.
Arrive early for the Extraordinary Concert at the Cathedral to secure a seat. Take advantage of the day to visit the city's Bellinian sites, from the Bellini Museum to his birthplace.
