Great classical music in the monumental settings of Catania
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Music and Monument Festival is a classical music series held in Catania, Sicily, during the Christmas season. Its concept is captured in its name: creating a dialogue between great musical tradition and some of the city's most significant monumental sites. Each concert becomes an opportunity to rediscover a historic palace or a monumental church, where the acoustics and atmosphere amplify the emotional power of the performance.
The series is promoted by the A. Scarlatti Italian Musical Cultural Institute, with the patronage of the Ministry of Culture and the Municipality of Catania. The artistic direction is entrusted to pianist Gianfranco Pappalardo Fiumara, who describes the project as a way to "restore to music its role of profound dialogue with places and history."
The heart of the festival is the Palazzo della Cultura, a historic complex in the center of Catania that hosts the piano recitals. The final concert traditionally takes place in the evocative Monumental Church of San Nicolò l'Arena, the largest church in Sicily, whose imposing nave provides a solemn backdrop for the major symphonic events.
The programming alternates piano recitals by established performers with symphonic concerts featuring an orchestra. Recent editions have featured pianists such as Ludovica Franco, Modesto Picci, Vincenzo Balzani, Giulio Potenza, Andrea Bacchetti, and Pappalardo Fiumara himself, alongside the Italian Symphony Orchestra. The repertoire ranges from great Romantic piano works to the Baroque pages of Johann Sebastian Bach.
Included in the Christmas events calendar of the Municipality of Catania, the Music and Monument Festival is a precious appointment for those who love classical music and wish to experience the historical and artistic heritage of the Etnean city in a unique and evocative way.
The dates and program for the 2026 edition of the Music and Monument Festival in Catania have not yet been announced. Given the annual nature of the event, which traditionally takes place in December between the Palazzo della Cultura and the Monumental Church of San Nicolò l'Arena, a new appointment during the Christmas period is likely. For updated information, we recommend checking the channels of the A. Scarlatti Italian Musical Cultural Institute and the Municipality of Catania.
