About Bellini International Context

The Bellini International Context is a cultural festival promoted by the Sicilian Region to celebrate the genius of Vincenzo Bellini, the "Catanese Swan," in his hometown and throughout Eastern Sicily. For two weeks in September, Catania and Messina transform into a vast, open-air stage: opera, symphonic and chamber concerts, jazz, dance, circus arts, sacred music, and talks bring theaters, historic villas, and iconic landmarks to life. Almost all events are free upon reservation, aiming to bring the general public closer to Bellini's music.

A festival dedicated to the Catanese Swan

The Bellini International Context is a major event that the Sicilian Region, through its Department of Tourism, Sport, and Entertainment, dedicates to the life and legacy of Vincenzo Bellini (1801–1835), the Catanese composer and one of the greatest masters of the Romantic bel canto. Created to put the music of the "Catanese Swan" back at the center of the stage, the festival takes place every year in September and spans two iconic cities of Eastern Sicily: Catania, the composer's birthplace, and Messina.

A widespread stage between Catania and Messina

The heart of the festival is the Teatro Massimo Bellini in Catania, but the program unfolds across many of the city's most beautiful and characteristic locations: the Villa Bellini, the Palazzo della Cultura, the Teatro Sangiorgi, the Cathedral Basilica of Sant'Agata, and the Vincenzo Bellini Conservatory. In Messina, the festival is hosted at the prestigious Teatro Vittorio Emanuele. This "widespread stage" format allows the public to rediscover the city through music, moving from one venue to another in an authentic cultural itinerary.

A multidisciplinary program

The Bellini International Context is not just about opera: the lineup weaves together symphonic and chamber concerts, jazz fusion, dance and circus arts performances, sacred music, new creations, discussions, and meetings. It is a constant dialogue between tradition and modernity that connects Bellini's teachings with today's artistic languages, involving orchestras, choirs, internationally renowned soloists, and local musical institutions.

A popular and free event

One of the most appreciated features of the festival is its popular vocation: almost all events are free upon reservation, with the sole exception of the headline opera performance. This choice attracts a wide audience, including locals, Sicilians, and both Italian and international tourists, to the bel canto heritage. The festival has become a staple in the Sicilian cultural calendar and contributes to the tourism promotion of the region in the heart of autumn.

Bellini International Context — edition 2026

The sixth edition of the Bellini International Context is expected, as per tradition, in September 2026 between Catania and Messina. As of now, the official dates and the program for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced by the Sicilian Region. The festival, now a consolidated appointment in the Sicilian cultural calendar dedicated to Vincenzo Bellini, is expected to repeat its widespread stage format across theaters, villas, and historic sites in both cities.

The dates and detailed program for the 2026 edition of the Bellini International Context have not yet been officially communicated. Based on previous editions, the festival usually takes place in the second half of September between Catania and Messina, featuring concerts, opera, jazz, dance, and sacred music, largely free upon reservation.

The detailed program will be announced by the Sicilian Region in the months leading up to the event. Please check the official website for updates.

Practical information — Bellini International Context

Getting there

Catania is served by the Catania-Fontanarossa "Vincenzo Bellini" international airport, just a few kilometers from the city center. The city is accessible by train (Catania Centrale station) and via the A18 Messina-Catania and A19 Palermo-Catania motorways. The main venues (Teatro Massimo Bellini, Villa Bellini, Palazzo della Cultura) are located in the historic center and are within walking distance.

Tickets and reservations

Most events are free with mandatory reservation on the official website belliniinternationalcontext.it or via Eventbrite. The headline opera performance is ticketed, with tickets available at the Teatro Massimo Bellini box office and through the Vivaticket network.

Tips

We recommend booking in advance for the most popular events and arriving at least 20 minutes before the start to secure your seat. September in Catania offers a mild climate, ideal for evening outdoor performances like those at Villa Bellini.
