August evenings dedicated to play and imagination in the heart of Otranto

The Children's White Night is one of the most anticipated summer events for families and children in Otranto, Italy's easternmost city and a jewel of Salento in the province of Lecce. For a few evenings in August, the historic center leaves its ordinary rhythms behind and lights up with games, colors, and laughter: a large part of the city is closed to traffic and reserved for children, who become the true stars of the evening.
The initiative is promoted by the Municipality of Otranto through its original Department of Kindness, in collaboration with the La Palumbara association. The underlying idea is simple and counter-current: to give children back an authentic playtime, made of manual skills, imagination, and relationships, away from tablets and phones. It is no coincidence that the slogan accompanying the event is a direct invitation: turn off your phones, turn on your childhood.
The streets and squares of the town — from Largo Porta Alfonsina to the Lungomare degli Eroi, up to Piazza Castello at the foot of the majestic Aragonese Castle — host dozens of play stations animated by educators and volunteers. Alongside the games, there are numerous activities designed to stimulate children's creativity and curiosity:
The Children's White Night is not just entertainment: for years, the festival has pursued an educational and charitable vocation. Past editions have hosted workshops supporting foundations working alongside vulnerable children, turning play into a gesture of sharing. It is this sensitivity, combined with the evocative setting of Otranto's historic center and its seafront overlooking the Adriatic, that makes the event a special moment of the Salento summer.
Setting the children's festival in Otranto means giving families an evening among white alleys, Aragonese walls, and the scent of the sea. The city, in Puglia, is famous for its medieval quarter, the cathedral with its renowned mosaic, and the castle that dominates the harbor: a backdrop that makes the night when play returns to be the true king of the city even more magical.
The Children's White Night returns to Otranto in the summer of 2026, confirming an appointment now well-established in the calendar of Salento families. The precise dates and detailed program of the 2026 edition have not yet been released by the organizers.
Based on previous editions, it is reasonable to expect a few evenings in the month of August, with the usual formula consisting of play stations, creative workshops, shows, and activities in the city's historic center. The complete program will be published by the Municipality of Otranto and the La Palumbara association closer to the event.

A few evenings in August, generally in the evening (roughly from 6:00 PM - 7:00 PM until midnight). The dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced: it is recommended to check the official channels of the Municipality of Otranto.
Admission and activities are free.
Otranto can be reached by car via the SS16 and SP87 roads from Lecce (about 45 km). The train station is served by the Ferrovie del Sud Est. In summer, it is recommended to use the parking lots outside the historic center, which is largely pedestrianized during the event evenings.
