The cherry festival in the Nebrodi mountains, in Montagnareale
The Cherry Festival is the early summer highlight in Montagnareale, a small village in the province of Messina, Sicily, overlooking the Gulf of Patti and nestled within the Nebrodi landscape. For one day, the entire historic center transforms into a journey of flavors and traditions dedicated to the fruit that has represented the area's agricultural excellence for generations: the cherry.
At the heart of the event is the promotion of local cherry varieties, starting with the renowned Ciliegia di Paradiso, known for its firm, juicy, sweet pulp and bright red color, which is also highly valued for its durability. Alongside this, other traditional varieties grown on the village hills are showcased. The festival was created specifically to promote local food and wine heritage and support the area's small-scale cherry farming.
Throughout the day, along the village streets, visitors can enjoy free cherry tastings and numerous local products. Food stalls offer specialties from Sicilian and Nebrodi cuisine: sausage sandwiches, horse meat, pasta rolls, and cherry-based desserts. It is the ideal opportunity to discover the authentic flavors of a rural village in the Messina hinterland.
The Cherry Festival blends gastronomy with popular entertainment. Folk groups, flag-wavers, decorated Sicilian carts, and vintage cars parade through the center, creating a lively atmosphere from morning until night. The squares serve as stages for musical performances, group dances, and concerts that keep the celebration going until late.
Visiting Montagnareale during the festival also means discovering a village with ancient charm: founded as Casale della Montagna and built inland at an altitude of about 300 meters to escape pirate raids, it retains a medieval layout of narrow alleys and stairways. Guided tours allow visitors to admire the historic center and the ancient water mill, which is still in operation, serving as a testament to the rural culture of the Nebrodi.
A simple and genuine day, perfect for those who want to experience authentic Sicily through tradition, nature, and hospitality.
The 16th edition of the Cherry Festival was held on Sunday, June 14, 2026, in Montagnareale (ME), confirming the success of the event dedicated to the village's signature fruit. Throughout the day, along the village streets, free tastings of cherries and local products were offered, from sausage sandwiches to horse meat and pasta rolls.
The program combined tradition and entertainment, with processions and parades that brought the historic center to life throughout the day.
Montagnareale can be reached by car via the A20 Messina-Palermo motorway, taking the Patti exit and continuing inland. The nearest train station is Patti-San Piero Patti on the Tyrrhenian line; the reference airport is Catania-Fontanarossa.
Admission to the festival is free. The event takes place over a full day, with stalls opening around noon and a program of parades and performances continuing until evening.
It is recommended to park near the town center and explore the village on foot, given the irregular layout of the streets. Wear comfortable clothing for guided tours of the historic center and the mill.
