The Imperial Cherry festival in the village of the Alto Casertano
In the heart of the Alto Casertano, the small village of Formicola, in the province of Caserta, dedicates one of its most cherished events every year to the Ciliegia Imperiale, a native variety considered among the finest fruit productions in Campania. For two weekends in June, the town's historic center comes alive with stalls, aromas, and music, transforming into a journey of taste and tradition that marks the arrival of summer.
The Ciliegia Imperiale of Formicola is distinguished by its intense red color, firm flesh, and perfect balance between sweetness and acidity. Harvesting is done strictly by hand, respecting natural ripening times, and comes exclusively from the hillside lands surrounding the village, at the foot of Mount Sant'Erasmo. During the festival, the cherry can be enjoyed fresh, just picked, or transformed into artisanal jams, tarts, zeppole, babà , sorbets, granitas, and fragrant liqueurs.
The evenings revolve around the food and wine stalls, open from 8:00 PM to midnight, which pair the cherry with specialties of Campanian cuisine and typical local products. Exhibitors, producers, and artisans bring the streets and squares of the historic center to life, offering visitors a true tasting itinerary through genuine flavors and traditional peasant recipes.
Every evening the festival offers free live music: among the most anticipated events is the concert by Tony Tammaro, a historic interpreter of Neapolitan folk music, scheduled for Saturday, June 13th. The musical program accompanies the four evenings with bands and shows, while Sunday mornings feature guided tours of the cherry orchards, nature excursions in the surroundings of the village, and activities dedicated to children.
Beyond the gastronomy, the Cherry Festival is the ideal opportunity to discover Formicola and its territory: alleys, churches, and glimpses of the Alto Casertano, in a welcoming and family-friendly environment. Organized by the Pro Loco Il Caprario with the patronage of the Municipality of Formicola, the event enhances the agricultural and cultural identity of this part of the province of Caserta, in Campania.
