A century of 'black feathers' in the shadow of the Arch of Augustus
In 2026, the Susa Alpini Group celebrated its centenary, a significant milestone marked by the entire community of the Susa Valley town, in the Province of Turin. The centenary festivities took place alongside the Centenary of the ANA Val Susa Section, creating an intense week of events from June 6 to 14, 2026, in the shadow of the famous Arch of Augustus, the city's landmark.
The Susa 'black feathers' represent a piece of local history: one hundred years of sacrifice, volunteering, and deep attachment to the mountains and the community. The Centenary was an opportunity to retrace a century of activity through a photography and museum exhibition, hosted at the UniTre premises on Via Mazzini 27, which gathered a rich collection of vintage photographs, historical objects, and memorabilia, many donated by private citizens.
For the occasion, Susa transformed: six city monuments were illuminated in green for ten days, from June 6 to 14, while shop windows in the center were decorated with an Alpine theme as part of a dedicated competition. The weekend evenings featured the Green Nights, moments of widespread celebration for the entire citizenry.
The event, free and open to all, was organized by the National Alpini Association - Val Susa Section with the patronage of the City of Susa. More than just an anniversary, the Centenary was a meeting point for generations, uniting retired Alpini, civil and military authorities, and citizens around the values of solidarity, memory, and belonging that have always characterized the world of the 'black feathers' in Piedmont.
2026 marked the Centenary of the Susa Alpini Group, celebrated together with the Centenary of the ANA Val Susa Section with a program of events spread across the city, from June 6 to 14.
For ten days, six Susa monuments were illuminated in green and the city center shop windows were decorated with an Alpine theme. The heart of the celebrations included the photography and museum exhibition, the special philatelic cancellation, and the grand evening concert at the Roman Arena, the culmination of a week dedicated to the memory and solidarity of the Piedmontese 'black feathers'.
Susa can be reached by car via the A32 Turin-Bardonecchia motorway (Susa exit) or by train from the Susa station, which is connected to Turin. The Centenary events took place in the historic center, at the Roman Arena, at the UniTre premises on Via Mazzini 27, and in the main city squares.
All Centenary initiatives were free of charge.
The festivities were held from June 6 to 14, 2026. The exhibition was open daily from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM and 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM.
