The patronal feast of Sant'Eusanio del Sangro dedicated to San Filippo Neri
In the heart of the Abruzzo spring, when the hills between the Maiella mountains and the Sangro river turn lush green, Sant'Eusanio del Sangro experiences its most awaited event: the celebrations in honor of the patron saint San Filippo Neri. This festival defines the identity of this small town of just over two thousand inhabitants in the province of Chieti, Abruzzo, drawing back emigrants, families, and visitors from neighboring villages every year.
San Filippo Neri, the jovial "Apostle of Rome" and founder of the Congregation of the Oratory, is venerated as the patron saint of Sant'Eusanio del Sangro. He is liturgically commemorated on May 26, the day of his dies natalis. The community has dedicated the parish church to him, which serves as the spiritual heart of the village and the focal point of the entire festival. He is not to be confused with Saint Eusanio, the Bishop of Siponto from whom the town takes its name and who, according to tradition, restored sight to a blind woman; his memory is celebrated on July 9.
The celebrations combine religious and secular dimensions, following the typical pattern of Abruzzese patronal feasts. The heart of the program is the solemn procession with the statue of the Saint through the streets of the town center, accompanied by the clergy, the faithful, and the traditional carri (floats) carrying offerings collected in honor of San Filippo. The event also features Holy Masses, brass band concerts, evening shows in the square, illuminations lighting up the village, fireworks, and activities for children including games, inflatables, and tastings of local products. It is a community celebration where the town's bonds are renewed year after year.
Sant'Eusanio del Sangro sits at an altitude of about 200 meters in a panoramic position between the Adriatic Sea and the Maiella mountains, with the Sangro river marking its southern border. A land of olive groves and vineyards, the town preserves the Church of Santa Maria Assunta and the 20th-century Palazzo De Titta, linked to the humanist Cesare De Titta. The patronal feast is the ideal opportunity to discover this authentic corner of the Chieti hinterland, far from mass tourism circuits and close to the Lago di Serranella WWF Oasis.
The 2026 patronal festivities of Sant'Eusanio del Sangro took place on May 24, 25, and 26, following the usual alternation between religious celebrations and secular events in the square. The official confirmation of the dates came from Municipal Ordinance no. 14/2026 of May 18, 2026, which imposed a temporary ban on traffic and parking "on the occasion of the celebrations in honor of the patron saint San Filippo Neri" for May 24 (Sunday, secular celebration) and May 26 (liturgical day of the Saint).
As per tradition, the central moment was the solemn procession with the statue of San Filippo Neri through the streets of the center, accompanied by the brass band, while the evenings featured shows, music, and popular festivities for all ages.
The detailed liturgical and secular calendar for the 2026 edition was not released in full online. Based on the established tradition of the festival, the celebrations unfolded as follows:
