Celebrations in Honor of the Madonna dei Fratelli

A festival that is the heart of the Fontechiari summer

Every year, in mid-July, Fontechiari gathers around its most cherished image: the Madonna dei Fratelli, venerated in the sanctuary that stands just outside the town, along the road leading into the village. The Celebrations in Honor of the Madonna dei Fratelli are the most heartfelt event on the local calendar, the moment when this village in the Comino Valley, in the province of Frosinone and thus in southern Lazio, rediscovers its deepest identity. This is not an event built for tourism: it is a community festival that, for generations, has marked the summer return of those who have moved away.

The sanctuary and its image

The Sanctuary of the Madonna dei Fratelli is attached to what was once a small convent. At the entrance, it welcomes visitors with a fine mosaic dedicated to the Madonna delle Grazie, the work of the religious order that once lived there. The 18th-century portal is made of local stone, featuring carved cherub heads and a broken pediment, while the 19th-century stucco altar retains a late-Baroque flair, with two pairs of columns and pilasters decorated with floral motifs.

At the center is the canvas that gives the devotion its name: a Holy Family attributed to an unknown 17th-century Roman painter, close in style to the Cavalier d'Arpino, with the Virgin in a blue robe holding the blessing Child and Saint Joseph behind her, carrying a flowering staff. The building also houses an 18th-century organ by Cesare Catarinozzi, 17th-century statues of Our Lady of Sorrows and Saint Michael the Archangel, a wooden crucifix of Neapolitan origin, and a 19th-century oval painting depicting the Education of the Virgin. The complex was restored in 1982-83, thanks in part to the contributions of Fontechiari emigrants in America.

Faith, brass bands, and processions

The religious portion of the festival follows a well-established ritual: the evening novena in the days leading up to the event, a mass dedicated to children and young people, and a celebration for the sick. The most anticipated moment is the procession: the sacred image is carried from the sanctuary toward the parish church and then along the village streets, traditionally accompanied by a brass band—over the years, the «Città di Isola del Liri» band—which gives the day the unmistakable mark of Ciociaria patronal festivals.

The square, the music, the evening

In the evening, the center of gravity shifts to Piazza Santa Maria, which becomes an open-air stage for concerts organized by the Festival Committee. These are free, family-friendly evenings with candy stalls, festive lights, and the entire village out in the streets until late: the classic model of a Lazio village festival, where the devotional and civil aspects coexist naturally.

Fontechiari and the Comino Valley

Fontechiari has just over a thousand inhabitants and is located in one of the greenest areas of the Frosinone region, near the National Park of Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise. The festival is part of the Fontechiari Summer calendar, promoted by the municipal administration together with the Pro Loco Fontechiari APS and local businesses, which brings concerts, tournaments, gastronomic evenings, and other traditional festivals to the village from July to August, culminating in the celebrations for Saint Roch at the end of August.

A devotion put to the test

In June 2018, a sacrilegious theft deprived the community of the precious canvas of the Madonna dei Fratelli. In October 2020, thanks to a benefactor, an antique-style copy created by a firm in Forlì was placed back in the dedicated chapel: a gesture that, in the midst of the pandemic, showed just how deeply rooted this image is in the hearts of the people of Fontechiari. Since then, the July festival has also taken on the value of a collective reaffirmation.
