The June patronal feast in Fragagnano
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
Every year, on the liturgical day of June 13th, the town of Fragagnano — a small inland center in the Province of Taranto, Puglia — pays homage to its patron saint with the Celebrations in Honor of Saint Anthony of Padua. This is the so-called "Small Feast," named to distinguish it from the much more lavish "Grand Feast" held annually on August 12th and 13th. More intimate and heartfelt, the June recurrence keeps the deep bond between the town and its protector intact.
Saint Anthony of Padua has been the patron saint of Fragagnano since 1904, when he succeeded Saint Irene of Lecce. Local tradition tells that around 1900, a traveler left a statue of the Saint in a tailor's shop during a violent storm and never returned to retrieve it; since then, the statue has been kept in the mother church and adopted as the community's protector. To this day, the statue is housed in the Church of the Immaculate Conception, the heart of the celebrations.
The most anticipated moment is the procession of the statue through the town center, accompanied by the "Città di Fragagnano" brass band, local confraternities, and hundreds of faithful. The blessing and distribution of Saint Anthony's bread is a staple, a gesture of charity and sharing that has united the entire community for generations, along with traditional firecrackers and firework displays that mark the festive days.
In Fragagnano, the cult of Saint Anthony is celebrated twice a year: the Small Feast in June, tied to the liturgical date of the 13th, and the Grand Feast in August (12th-13th), featuring illuminations, a bandstand, major concerts, and pyrotechnic shows. This dual recurrence testifies to how central the figure of the Saint is to the identity of this town in the Province of Taranto.
The celebrations are traditionally held on June 12th and 13th each year. The dates and detailed program for the 2026 edition have not yet been officially announced by the Festival Committee; they will be released in the weeks leading up to the event.
At the moment, the Festival Committee and the Parish of the Church of the Immaculate Conception have not yet released the official dates and the program for the 2026 Small Feast of Saint Anthony of Padua in Fragagnano. The celebration is usually held on June 12th and 13th, corresponding to the Saint's liturgical day. This page will be updated as soon as the program is made public.
