An Apennine stage on the roads of the 2009 Giro d'Italia
The Catria Ride is a highly anticipated event for endurance cycling enthusiasts seeking a true challenge. Starting from Cantiano, a small municipality in the province of Pesaro and Urbino nestled at the foot of Monte Catria, this non-competitive cycling tour faithfully retraces the route of one of the toughest stages of the 2009 Giro d'Italia, the Centenary edition, remembered as a true queen stage.
The heart of the Catria Ride is the sequence of three major climbs in the central Apennines, tackled in order over the nearly 180 kilometers of the route:
Along the way, you'll also encounter the Passo della Scheggia and the climb to Fonte Avellana, in a succession of hairpin bends, forests, and ridges. The total elevation gain exceeds 4,300 meters: a true mountain stage, reserved for those with trained legs and minds.
The Catria Ride is not a race: it is an ARI-Audax Italia homologated brevet, where there are no rankings or stopwatches. The goal is to finish, enjoy the scenery, and share the effort with other participants. The start follows the classic randonnรฉe style, with cyclists setting off in a staggered manner from early morning from Piazza Luceoli, in the center of Cantiano.
Organized by ASD Italiana Occhiali, the event showcases an authentic and uncrowded territory in the mountainous heart of the Marche Region. Monte Catria, with its unmistakable mass and the statue of Christ the Redeemer at its summit, is one of the landscape symbols of the province of Pesaro and Urbino: cycling at its foot and around its valleys means discovering a silent and genuine Italy, made of villages, beech forests, and panoramas stretching to the Adriatic on clear days.
The fifth edition of the Catria Ride was held on Sunday, May 31, 2026, confirming the traditional route inspired by the queen stage of the 2009 Giro d'Italia. With a staggered start between 7:30 AM and 8:00 AM from Piazza Luceoli in Cantiano, cyclists tackled 178 kilometers with a total elevation gain of 4,355 meters.
For this edition as well, the maximum limit was set at 250 participants, with the number of registered riders exceeding 200 on the ARI-Audax portal.
Route: 178 km, 4,355 meters of positive elevation gain. Non-competitive cycling event (no rankings), homologated by ARI-Audax Italia.
Along the route: 3 intermediate aid stations and a generous final refreshment with local specialties and beer. All participants who complete the course receive a commemorative finisher medal.
Cantiano is located along the Strada Statale 3 Flaminia, easily reachable by car from Pesaro, Urbino, and Umbria (Gubbio). The start is set at Piazza Luceoli, in the historic center.
Participation is exclusively through online registration on the ARI-Audax Italia portal (audaxitalia.it), with a limited number of participants. No on-site registration is available. The fee is approximately 40 euros, including intermediate refreshments and a finisher medal.
The route is challenging (almost 180 km and over 4,300 meters of elevation gain): it is recommended for trained and well-equipped cyclists. Bicycles in excellent condition, low gears, and clothing suitable for mountain temperature variations are recommended.
